996 to 848 rear brake anyone?

  1. Hi. I'm sure I read on here somewhere that an 848 rear disc and caliper hanger fit straight onto the 996 swingarm.
I can't find the thread now.
Is it true though? Obviously it allows the mounting of a wheel speed sensor using the pick ups on the disc and what i think is TCS mounting points on the 848 caliper hanger.
I currently use this little home made bracket mounted on the swingarm using the sprocket bolts as a pick up.

Poor picture I know, but as you can see, it doesn't look too good, and is pretty exposed for even a little off.
Has anyone don'e the mod for 848 bits?

  2. Have also read that it fits, however if you just want a neater speedo pickup then move it under the swingarm to read from the disc bolts, here's what I did;

I cable tied the wire to the rear brake line and it runs through the brake line cover on the hugger - you wouldn't even notice it unless you were looking for it.

  3. I've done mine exactly the same as DukeDesmo above - the TransLogic sensor I have is a different size to the Ducati one so doesn't fit the caliper mount properly!

  4. Yes it is true the 848 hanger and disc fit straight on to the 996 swing arm. But depending what wheels you are running you might have issue with caliper to spoke clearance. On my project bike (748R/1098) I fitted the 848 parts and with the Marchesini Forged Ali wheels everything is okay. I then bought some Marchesini magnesium wheels and found that the caliper fouled the spokes. I then spent ages trying to find a slimmer caliper that didn't cost the earth, I ended up with an ISR unit but that needed a couple of mm taking of the OD of the disc.

I'll try and take some pictures later when the garage warms up.

I've also got a Translogic dash on my 853 and I did a solution much like DukeDesmo's above. However I've just acquired another set of 848 parts to convert this one as well. If you go for it, good luck finding the parts, lots of breakers think the 1098 and 848 parts are the same but they are not.

  5. Taken on the phone so not the best quality...

  6. I believe the hyper hanger will also do.
There's a lengthy thread on MS covering this also.
DM is right, many breakers will advertise the hanger as 848/1098/1198.
    The 848 is smaller.

  7. Failing that I have a spare front wheel speed sensor bracket if needed which replaces the speedo drive..

  8. Oooooh guys. You've all been very helpful. Thanks very much, I've run out of money to just throw at it until things do what I want.
I'm thinking the dukedesmo & antonye solution will be the best. However... I use titanium disc bolts, and from what I remember the reason I moved it to the rear was because it wasn't picking up the front, titanium, disc bolts.
Hmmm, maybe I might just need the disc.
Thanks again, and keep any more thoughts coming.

  9. That won't work, the disc is a larger diameter. The hanger holds the caliper further out as well providing a mount for the hall sensor.

  10. Looks like the hyper hanger gives probs if I'm reading the MS thread correctly, unless you just need the disc and caliper, not the HAL sensor.

Disc only wont work as DM says.

  11. The Translogic sensor needs magnetic bolts, I would think they all do? so even stainless steel is no good.

  12. The Hyper mounts the speed sensor at the top and it fouls the 916 swingarm when you try to adjust the chain... as I found to my expense!
The swingarms are slightly different in the exact place you want them to be the same ;)

  13. It looks so much neater having the sensor where you guys have it, that I know it's going to happen at some point. I'll get Christmas out the way then have a serious look at it. I can see it getting a little expensive as I've wanted a smaller rear caliper for a while so will probably end up tinkering with things I don't really need to. But as I tell my wife, it's better i come home smelling of fuel, oil and grease, than beer and cheap perfume. So really by spending on the bike I'm saving my marriage.
