Hello, I went to see a 1198s today. The seller had it at its uncle's shop for display. He tells me he has barely used it. It's from 2009 and it has 5500 miles. According to him he has only changed the oil once and belts. He showed me a receipt which is also from his uncle's shop. This to me seems very suspicious, which according to the manual you need to change the oil at least every 6 months. I would be fine with once a year but this guys has only done it once in almost 5 years. The bike looked fine fiscally, the chain did show some rust but that's about it. Resuming, what do you guys think of a bike with barely any use and one oil change in 5 years period? -Thanks
No . Oil changes are on milage which the first is at 600 and the next at 7500. The belts are ,I believe ,15000 miles or 3 years on the later ducatis so hes right there too . https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=...ceSchedules/ScheduledMaintenanceFourValve.pdf
Or annually. Time and/or mileage dependant I've changed mine every 3k or so miles, whatever bike. Or annually.
I was looking at the service manual included with the bike. The one you show does not have time only miles and Kms.
I just put the deposit down, it's being serviced over the winter, and I'll pick it up as soon as the weather picks up. So, unknown as this time, but I wouldn't have bought it if I wasn't confident it should be OK.
Just found the manual over at the ducati site. For what i can understand the oil needs changed every 6 months even if the bike is not moved... http://ducati.com/vi/service/servic...&langBooklets=48&langBooklets_new_value=false
I agree that's what it says. I decided it was more of a negotiation point than a mechanical concern, but it's whatever you're comfortable with. You should be able to judge whether the bike has been looked after as a garage queen (as the mileage suggests), or not.
The bike externally was in perfect conditions, it was recently washed. When the owner turned it on some water with some oil came out from the rear bottom. I looked at with with a led flashlight, it might had been painted in the rear since the black metal fixtures had some red on them but I'm not sure if they come like that from factory. This is the second 1198 I look at and the other had the same.
