My helmet is a boring black, as I really don't like the designs on offer, and I'm not interested in a replica. I'm not bothered enough to invest in a custom spray paint job, but it seems a vinyl wrap could be a relatively inexpensive route to a wider choice of designs, with the option to switch on occasion. A quick Google shows some suppliers, but not as many as I'd expect. Those available there are possibly aimed at track users only - it's not made clear. So, why aren't helmet wraps more popular? Maybe the shape and vents etc would make the application too fiddly, or give a poor result?
Covering damage etc could be a reason. How do you know if the shell is cracked if its covered with wrap. Not sure what happnes when you add heat either.
My Girlfriend spotted a helmet she liked last year and the graphics on it were not too complicated, so I looked at the option of buying a plain one and asking a mate who is a professional signwriter about doing the design in vinyl. He said that the stuff used on helmets is specialist stuff and not the same as the vinyl he uses for doing HGV trucks and tanker trailers. It may have been a polite way of saying it was too small a job to be bothered with, but I suspect that the Helmet vendors know that the £100.00 ish difference between plain and pretty designs is close enough to prevent any small scale copying.
I believe the adhesives used on stickers etc can have an advers effect on helmet construction. Read it somewhere. Steve
I recall that as well. I'm sure I read that the glue from stickers etc weakens the construction of the helmet...
The only danger from putting stickers on your helmet is that some slogans on stickers can cause the wearer to be struck repeatedly in the head for being a complete tosser.
