Can anyone who is fluent in white man's magic and has had first hand experience dealing with wiring looms, tell me what has happened here. It had black tape on when I bought it - I took it off. I have never started the bike so don't know if there are any electrical issues. 1. Does it look like something has happened and he has taken the shrink wrap off done something to the wires and black taped it back up. 2. It always had black tape on in this position and wiring and soldered joints look normal. 3. The shrink wrap has come off and wiring and soldered joints look normal. 4. He has made some modification to the wiring (as people are prone to do with Ducatis) and taped it back up. It's the wiring that runs up the front left of the frame. Cheers Gaz
I have seen factory joins where two wires are joined into one or more/one wire is spliced into the run of another but that grey/red snake in your picture is a single to single wire and from what I can see then joint doesn't look factory-like in lower picture - that is definitely an aftermarket joint. It could be that an alarm has been removed and if so there will be several similar, while you're at it you could check that black wire ganged joint maybe.
Looking at all the wiring diagrams, it may be an OEM joint.........the front and rear brake light switches appear to be linked with 3 grey / red wires.....one to each switch and one to the brake light.....but as Chris says, it is a bit of a shitty joint in the pics. AL
that one-on-one joint is definitely not a factory joint and i'll stump up £500 on the nose to say it isn't right now - up for it AL?
Agree with Chris although not an expert with Ducati looms but reasonably versed with wiring. The sleeving does not look like its been cut to gain access and although not the best joint I've seen an awful lot worse. Is there a particular concern? If not I'd just check the integrity to make sure its mechanically sound (ie properly soldered) and then put some self amalgamating tape around the bare soldered joint John
Even if I was up for it, there would be a great debate as to who would win....... Look at the top pic again --- That is a two into one joint..........but as you say, it is crap.
you are right, it is a '2 into 1' and I noticed just after I posted (and so slightly strengthens case for being 'factory' lol). All in jest as, as you also quite rightly said - whose to prove it either way?
I have just braved the cold and had a snitch at my harness --- bear in mind I haven't cut into it so I can't actually see, but after a bit of tugging on the grey/red wire at the plug, I think I can feel through the outer sleeve a similar connection in about the same place as gaz92's, although it seems a bit larger which could be due to a wrap of insulting material, I suppose.
My harness hasn't been interfered with along the same length as Gaz92's but as I can't see the connection, I can't tell for certain what it is. However, all the wiring diagrams (3 Haynes and 2 OEM) show the two into one connection, but they don't show an actual connector like they do in other places.
Chaps, First thanks for all comments. There are three soldered joints. A. 1 thick black into 4 thin black - look like negative running to starter relay / rear brake light & fuel level & fuel pump. B. 1 thin blue into 2 - fuel level and neutral switch. C. 1 thin grey/red into 2 - rear brake switch / rear brake light and going to front brake switch (as AL said) As generally commented I now don't think it's been hacked into, there does not seem to be any heat damage on adjacent wires, just not sure why it's been messed with and left exposed. Looking at wiring diagram it now makes a bit more sense and on balance would say it looks about right and can follow the connection but there does seem to be some connection coming off wires I can't physically see on the loom - may be they are covered by outer casing. I would like to heat shrink wrap but would have to take all the connectors off. Done a few before but if anyone knows of a special tool let us know or I will get the paper clips out again. Cheers Gaz
I have modified both my 97SS and my Paso harnesses , and those joins look pretty factory to me , maybe someone has removed the sleeving off the red/grey join , but I wouldn't be surprized if it was never there
