Can't undo swingarm/ride height bolt

  1. Hi, me again..

Sorry, but this is my first rebuild I've attempted, it's going well but, getting the odd headache, I think it's better to ask before you start breaking things ...

I cannot move a small hexagon headed bolt which is down a hole in the swingarm as per pics... I'm trying to get the shock out but, I've done the usual,,, WD40 , hit around area with a rubber mallet and swore a bit too..

The rubber bung was in place covering the hole so it can't be that rusty... The heads good at mo but I'm putting so much leverage on it it's untrue... Any suggestions pls...

  2. can you look at the exploded parts page just to make sure there is nothing else holding it other than a captivated thread the other end of the bolt…and are you getting wd 40 on the captivated end

  3. Are you just turning the nut , don't you need to be attacking both at the same time.

  4. The way i read it. It isnt turning at all

  5. Thanks for your thoughts appreciated...

On pic 1 you can see the black hole... 4 inches down inside is a 8 mm capped head Allen bolt which I can reach ok .. The bolt disappears down the hole in the swingarm and comes out through the bottom of the shock and then through the ride height adj.. On the end of this is a threaded piece and another Allen headed cylinder type nut which came off no worries... But seeing as the other end won't move I'm guessing it's threaded through the swingarm, I don't want to try and drive it out from the pic 2 end only to find it's threaded and mess it up...

  6. Knock it out. The arm isnt threaded.

  7. had a similar dlemma on a Dino head once - you could try acting on the caphead bolt the other end first as although not recommended normally it sometimes works - has to be a good fitting/quality allen socket and again, stop if you feel you are going to overload it. If this doesn't work and you still feel you are going to damage the nut the other end by method so far then get a full-hex deep impact socket that fits the hole or if it's only just too big then grind the diameter down. This will either undo it or snap the end off in which case at least you can drift the pivot bolt out.

  8. Probably a silly question but have you removed all the weight load from the swing arm & suspension?

  9. it won't help undoing the nut though Snips?

  10. You could try heating it with a hot air gun and then using a good penetrating oil while it's warm but not hot enough to "fry" the oil. The swinging arm does not have any captive threads, it uses an insert on the other side.

The torque when new was 40-44 NM so if you know you are putting substantially more than that into freeing the bolt then is has no doubt seized. I would give it a lot of time for the penetrating oil to really do it's job.

I have never really had a problem with this bolt before as the eye of the lower ride height does not normally corrode that badly and therefore the only real thing stopping it should be corrosion of the insert as far as I can see.

You could also try using an air impact driver on it to see if that shocks it loose, that's if you have one. Start of low and see if it has any effect.

As mentioned a really good fit on the allen key hole is essential, I use a very hard sump key on mine which is short and therefore less likely to snap, it's also pretty hard so I I doubt it would round off that easily.

    Best of luck.
