Monster starting issue

  1. Hi,despite having had my 796 Monster connected to an Ultimate battery charger for over a week recently,on attempting to start the bike, there was absolutely no battery present to turn the engine over.Voltage coming out of the charger is 14-15volts,so thats working ok,however,on turning the ignition key there is no dash display at all, nothing, zilch!I connected my meter towards the battery to at least see how much voltage there was, however it indicates a full short circuit!Has the bike gone into some sort of "shut down mode? The bike is only 15months old, whats the warranty on Ducati bikes these days?plus would the battery if that is faulty,be covered?

  2. Sounds like the battery is dead. If it wasn't a "short circuit" to bring the volts down to zero would produce a helluva lot of heat. It sounds more like a dead cell in the battery presenting a very high internal resistance. The charger will show 14-15 volts but no, or very little current will be flowing into the battery. Put it on the charger overnight and measure the voltage across the terminals before you connect it to the bike. If the battery is good it should be around 13.0 - 13.2V. Connect it to the bike and turn on the ignition, it should still maintain better than 12.5V. If it doesn't it's duff. I've no idea if your warranty will cover the battery but there's no harm in asking.

  3. Hi,thanks for the info, however I'm falling at the first hurdle in regards to checking the battery off the bike! The battery is located under the petrol tank, and reading through the instructions in the hand book,it sounds quite complicated or it could be that I'm just lacking in mechanical proficiency!

  4. Ok. I thought you had removed the battery from the bike to charge it. In that case, after charging the battery measure across the terminals if you can access them. If not can you measure across the terminals of the connector for the Optimate or whatever charging system you use? This measurement should be done before switching on the ignition. Immediately after charging it should in excess of 13V but will drop down around 12.7V after a few hours.

  5. With regard to checking the existing voltage on the battery,as I said it was connected to the optimate for over 1 week,so time wise it should be charged by now.As regards testing towards the battery, the bike comes with a fitted connector lead to which you can easily connect the charger. Its to this connector that I've put my meter and am reading no voltage just a full short.I'm going to ring the dealer tomorrow and see if they either know what the problem is or at least agree to pick the bike up and sort it out. They have been really helpful in the past,so we will have to see!

  6. Is there an in-line fuse on the fly lead? There is on my Optimate fly lead. If the fuse is blown then you will get no voltage.

  7. If there is an inline fuse then it must be hidden deep inside the wiring as I can't actually see it.However if the fuse has blown wouldn't the meter show a dis not a short cct?Just thinking/typing out loud. All comments welcome, thanks

The early ones used a glass in line fuse

  9. No volts is not a "short" it just means no volts!
