Put my bike together about a month ago and have been too busy riding it to have eyes for another woman. All was well until.......suddenly the bike seemed to be crying from the n/s sort of filler cap area of the coolant condenser bottle. I have stripped it back to have a quick look (before having to take the bottom hose off) and is blowing up the inside of the screen and on top of the l/h fork top. is there ever a problem with the caps? The bottle seems ok at a glance. I have heard of them breaking. Is this a crack or seam splitting? Also, if anyone would care to speculate on what sort of chip i have in there? I have one on order anyway. It's a DUCATI 996 EPROM O 50 open exhaust chip 965031AAA. Will it work with my bike. I have 50 micron end cans.? Should i pressure test the system from the condensor bottle? Seems to link to one futher down. Any thoughts on theories or common faults appreciated. Ps coolant tastes horrible.!!
It's more likely that you will find the bottle has actually split on close examination as they are renowned for it. A search on here (or other Ducati Forums) will pick up on previous threads Densel.
It might be worth checking the o ring in the neck of the bottle, mine leaked from there, as Chris says a comon fault is a cracked seam. Steve
I've had both and the result is quite similar but I would say that misting of the screen inside is more indicative of a crack in the bottle. As mentioned the seam goes and it can often be quite hard to notice. If the engine gets particularly hot as when in traffic that can be enough to start it off.
It's more like droplets than mist. I have taken the neck off the bottle an can see the seal. Seems fine! Is it possible to weld the bottle or should I just get a new one? Any ideas on the EPROM
In that case it could be the radiator cap on the header tank. When mine went it just kept losing water and I think it might have been due to the pressure exceeding the ability of the cap to seal and going into the overflow tank. I didn't get any droplets though as I was losing water out of the overflow when it became full. It's possible you could weld the tank with JB Weld as I did that to a plastic car overflow tank as a temporary measure until I got a new one, but it was still perfect when I took it off. Large end cans often don't work on a 748 so I have been informed as they end up being too large for the gas flow. I would suggest possibly a 748R chip might be a better bet. Is it a stock Biposto engine?
Sorry, missed the second injector! In that case 50mm cans will certainly work on a 996. A full dyno run and re-chip by someone like CJS will work the best followed by a dyno run and fitting a Power commmander. You might be able to get a chip or map from somewhere but it's not likely to be perfect. The very best way to go is a full remap but it's not cheap.
I had 5 or 6 coolant header tanks, the first one lasted years the replacements not long at all. One of them leaked immediately. I've fixed the problem now with an aluminium tank, won't leak again...
turns out that the eprom has a cover over it (a plastic holder/protector/anti tamper thing) that needs to have the silicone stuff removed, then the cover (did this with snipe nose). used snipe nose again to fit, but be carefull you get it in strait. bent some pins locating one side first. be careful and have a small electritions with you. still has 4000 flat spot, but revs quicker, it seems from a brief outing. need to put on new tyres and where can I get the said aluminium tank from please and how much?
These tanks I believe were a corse item and are as rare as rocking horse poo. That said I have found this CNC FABRICATION Coolant Tank V2: 748 / 916 / 996 / 998 If this is unappealing Mark at MADSL my be able to fabricate one for a price
Mine came from a chap on a US forum who was making them for a while, but unfortunately he has now stopped doing them. As mentioned above Motowheels sell one but it is quite expensive. It might be worth someone over here setting up to make something, as suggested above maybe MADASL would be interested? but I suppose there'd need to be a minimum quantity to be worth doing.
I think the Corse tanks are very different. My 998 tank was the proddy item: the Corse tank differs by curling around the headstock
And won't fit a road bike unless you move/alter the instruments, plus they're made of the same material as the standard tank so may still spring a leak?...
I have bought a new header, lets hope the caps OK. With hindsight, I am going to get my mates dad to fab me one up. He likes challenges, can weld aluminium, has an anodiser and if a brilliant engineer. I will definitely make sure the filler neck that is accessible without removing the tank...etc.
