Brembo 4 Pad Calipers - Lesson Learned

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by RickyX, May 13, 2014.

  1. There I was yesterday hooning around Brands Indy Circuit having a great time until...

On a fairly fast (for me) lap, exited Druids as normal, hard on the gas, started braking for Graham Hill at the bottom of the hill when.."PING!"...NO BRAKES....FAAAAAAAAAAARK!!!!!
I ran straight on up the grassy hill and coasted to a stop about 5m short of the armco. Scary.
Luckily, out of ALL the corners on the circuit, this is about the only one I can imagine where serious injury and bike destruction would not result.

Back in the pits: removed the calipers (749R standard radial Brembo 4 pads) and found that one one of the pads was completely missing! That would explain the "PING!" noise and subsequent lack of pressure. As the pad departed, it must have impacted the disc bobbins resulting in the disc being very rattly indeed (compared to the good side).

I managed to get a brand new set of pads (both sides oviously) from one of the No Limits instructors (thanks) however, when he saw the pad I had removed from my bike he said "Aha...you have the old style pads with the thin backing plate. They increased the plate thickness to prevent the pads dropping out when they wear down" TELL ME ABOUT IT!!

Anyway, I put the new pads in and swapped my Supercorsa onto my spare wet wheel (with good-ish discs) and managed to have a whole afternoon of fun and frolicks.

    Two things:

    1. Can new bobbins be fitted to Galfer Wave discs? If so, where, who, how much etc.
    2. Anybody else had this happen with Brembo P4 Calipers? Pads were Bendix MRR Track compound.

Lesson learned: watch them wear limits on brake pads!!

  2. I bet your cacks were browned up after that. At Graham Hill bend too. Fast. Lucky. Hehe. :upyeah:

  3. That reminds me I do need a new set

  4. Jeez! I can't believe brembo allowed calipers to go out with an issue like that!!! Is it only when they are beneath the wear limit or just as soon as they are part worn? Glad u are okay, that's the main thing

  5. They were probs under the wear limit I'm afraid to admit.

Anyway, anybody know if I can get my disc bobbins replaced?

  6. Sounds scary indeed! They were the correct pads to begin with?

  7. Fair play for the honesty, lesson deffo learnt.

  8. Must have been well scary! Glad it didn't ruin the day for you.

Is there a Galfer dealer/importer in the UK? Probably worth contacting them directly about new bobbins.

  9. Didn't the OP say the pads were not OEM , i would not blame Brembo unless those pads are exactly the same as Brembo originals

  10. Correct pads but not OEM Brembo. They were Bendix MRR262 "Trackday/Race" compound.

I wasn't blaming Brembo. However, I would expect that a well renouned aftermarket braking product supplier such as Bendix would have had a lot of experience with design/manufacture of pads and would have considered the backing plate thickness so that they would not fall out!

I have used those before but "upgraded to the MRR compund. The MF ones also have the thin backing! They do however work really well so just keep an eye on the wear rates!!

Anybody got some spare front discs to sell to me??

    R

  11. I'll go for the MRR's then. Cheers for that

Pisses me off how I can buy a set of front pads for my car for half the price! Grrrrrrr

  12. Goes to prove you need to check this kind of stuff before going on track.

  13. Ricky, if you're desperate, I've got 'some' you can use

  14. I have a few options regarding my knackered disc:

In order of cost, but not preference:
    - Buy S/H 999 Discs off eBay of unknown heritage: £150
    - Replace the knackered disc with ONE same type Galfer Wave disc: £188
    - Replace BOTH Discs with Galfer Wave: £376
    - Replace BOTH Discs with Galfer Wave inc Pads: £428
    - Replace BOTH Discs with blingy Brembo HPK Fully Floating Discs (as on my 916): £528

    What is the concensus?

  15. Im sure ive had some stuff of them in the past with no problems at all.

  16. How sure is "sure"?

  17. Looks like the right place.
How did you rate the service - delivery etc?
