1200 Wiggle After New Rear Tyre Fitted

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Firebladeboy, Jun 8, 2014.

  1. Hi all,

So I had a pair of new Bridgestone T30s fitted by a non-Ducati workshop. I could SWEAR I feel a little wiggle from the rear now when throwing it into a corner. Are the rear torque settings critical or is there a chance a shim or spacer has been omitted? Anyone else have something like this happen? Thanks in advance! FBB

  2. That's scary! Maybe its just the tyres? After running Pirelli Diablo Rosso II on my FZ1 last year I had Bridgestone S20 fitted and didn't like them at all. Did you check the tyre pressure? I would have thought if a spacer was missing that the wheel would make some rattling noises (maybe like a shot wheel bearing) and wiggle a fair bit. I would not have thought a few pounds of torque either way would make much difference....my torque wrench only goes up to 200 so I gave it a bit extra for good luck and my rear wheel seems good.

  3. Don't get too excited on the torque.
Making sure the thread and other parts are clean then greased is critical. Tighten to the specified torque, however you them have to choose too overtightened or loosen 1/2 a turn to get the spring clip on.

  4. Thanks for the responses! I need to get the back wheel in the air I think to check for play. I've got an Abba stand for my old 'Blade but I'll get an adapter to I can use it hoist the Mutley up. Two further questions: are there any shims/washers that could have been omitted? Also, what would be the pressures for the T30's? 42/36 or 36/36 (As I read somewhere). Cheers, FBB

  5. Take a close look at the edge of the tyre, may not be seated on the rim, often the cause of a wobble after tyre fitting.

  6. I'm running 36 / 36.

  7. Have you run the tyres in? Some new tyres need to be used a few 100 miles carefully

  8. Most tyre manu's refer you back to the manual that came with the bike. My 2013 manual (in old money) suggests 36psi front and back for solo , or 41 front and back with Pillion and/or luggage.

  9. I was talking about something similar to this with my mechanic recently, and he said the same thing about the newer ducati are set up re- traction control etc so precisely and their settings with Pirellis and when you fit others ( infact it was a bridgestone he put on a 1198 I think ) it causes little issues like you suggest. I wouldn't know as I am not a mechanic but just mentioned if it helps.

  10. 36 front? I run 34/36 or 38 f/r, never have run same pressures f/r

Just fitted pr4 and no issues whatsoever

  11. Who knows why...

  12. Who reads the manual?! Man up, yer sissy ;)
    Lol

  13. I had a similar problem with my old Angel GT rear tyre it was that squared off every time I threw it in to a bend I got a wiggle at the rear when it rolled over the edge of the flatted part. it the tyre you got the right profile for the bike?
I doubt there's a missing shim as far as I know there's just a tapered nut that centres the hub onto the back flange.

There is a thin line all the way round the sidewall, close to the bead. It should be equidistant from the rim all the way round, on both sides.

  15. When I saw the heading I thought it was an instruction:)

  17. Thanks for al the advice everyone (and the jokes! :) ) I've been AWOL for a week or two but I'll check all the things you suggest and let you know what I find. Cheers, FBB

  18. Update on this: after about 700 miles on the tyres they seem fine so I suppose it was just bedding-in or they seated properly on the beads after a while. All seems good with them now. Thanks everyone.
