Multistrada Electronically Limited?? How Do I Take This Off?

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by cooslugs, Jul 14, 2014.

  1. Please help, I've recently bought a second hand 2013 multistrada GT. After riding it for a couple of months and gained a level of confidence I started to have a bit more of a play on it and realised it only goes to 6000rpm in any gear and it's top speed is well below the advertised 155mph, not that I intend to even try to get near that but I thought the top speed was restricted quite low on my machine. On the display it shows it is in sports mode and 150hp high. Just wondered if I was missing something somewhere, or I am looking in the wrong place for the answers or this is just how the machine performs but everywhere I read reviews about the bike it seems like there is a limiter on in the system somewhere. I'm very much a novice and not very technical with it so any help with this would be much appreciated.

  2. What happens when you hit 6000rpm? Engine cuts out? Revs no higher?

    Something is not right somewhere.

  3. Ooooh…never heard of this one. Question: is it the same 6000 RPM limit in all gears? Or does it vary a little with each? If the former you may have an ECU that's been flashed perhaps and someone set a limit on it? Is it possible someone modified this as a "learner" bike with power capped at 35hp? (bet the Mutley produces more than that at 6000rpm though). Does the engine seem smooth? i.e are both cylinders firing?

  4. Sounds like the exhaust valve is seized

  5. When it hits 6000rpm it just won't rev any higher and when it hits 105mph it won't go any further, with full throttle in 6th gear, down hill!!

  6. Thanks for all the replies. Everything feels brill with the bike, smooth as silk that's why nothing stood out as wrong to me until I've had the guts to push it a bit more. I think judging by the responses I've had there is definately something a miss and it's not just my imagination so unfortunately it looks like an expensive trip to the garage!!!!! Or does anyone have any tips that I could check myself that doesn't involve me destroying my pride and joy?!?!?

  7. If its a seized ex valve it would be covered by warranty

  8. I don't know the functions of the 1200 Multi, but the rev ceiling on my old Aprilia RSV Mille R is user defined by following instructions in the user manual, so you can set the red line, beyond which it won't rev, at anywhere from 4,000 to 12,000. Someone here will know whether that's the case with the 1200 Multi

  9. Not seen it anywhere on the computer and have the manual (PDF copy) I just took a look through and nothing like this mentioned at all.

Seems odd that it's speed limited, does it change in other modes? Try selecting touring or similar to see if it changes the ability to rev higher, the modes don't have a speed limiter as far as I have seen and I do like to mess with settings :D

Valve can be checked easily enough by removing the few screws on the exhaust shield cover, turn on the ignition on the bike and it should go through the open/close cycle without bother.

  10. I couldn't find anything in the paperwork that referred to limiting the speed electronically. I haven't tried it in the other modes as yet to see if it does the same but will have a play and see what I can find out and see if I can get a look at the ex as well, failing all that ill book it in and see if I can get to the bottom of it. Thanks again for the help and I'll post on my findings for future reference.

  11. In theory when reflashing it could be set.
Mines been raised to 9500RPM (Chris of CJS please confirm), but I never take it above 9000RPM, as peak power is produced way before that.
Note 150MPH on a Mutley is pretty scary and I've got an Ohlins steering damper.
    Without....err not for me.

  12. Believe me I have no intention of reaching those kind of speeds but I was surprised when the bike maxed out before I bottled it. It's always been the other way round on the 600 I had before so when I bought the 1200 ducati it wasn't what I expected to happen!! And also the low rpm range means I'm always skipping up and down the gears. It's just the fact that after research and help on the forum I now know it's not working as it should and with the price tag of the machine I'd expect it too!!

  13. No the MTS1200 doesn't have anything like that, the only restriction would be if you had a French model restricted to 100BHP

  14. Sounds like a trip to the dealer is called for. It's not necessarily going to be expensive though as the bike should be still under warranty. Get them to check it and let you know of the likely cost (if any) before they commence work. I think you'll like it when the "limit" has been removed! Hold on to your hat! ;-)

  15. It sounds very much like a seized exhaust valve to me, I had exactly the same problem when this happened and now I seem to find it necessary to 'fettle' the damn thing virtually every 4-6 weeks in order to keep it properly functional!o_O
This really is a major design 'faux-pas', or whatever this translates into in Italian. Either way it's crap detailing from an ownership perspective and ought to have been fully resolved by Ducati for the bike owner:Greedy:

My view for what it's worth......

  16. Any update on this @cooslugs? I'm curious what the problem is.

  17. Finally had the bike in and got the problem sorted. It was the exhaust valve that was seized shut and when this happens the ecu holds the power back so you can't damage the engine so in essence it becomes power limited!!! So I'm very embarrassed to say I test drove the bike and bought something I was very happy with but was only about 90hp. Now I've just picked the bike up this morning it's twice as loud which I love and it moves like shit of a shovel. The multistrada is now the bike I always wanted and thought I had bought first time round but in reality I've been riding its 90hp equivalent for the past 3 months!!!!!! Idiot!!!!!! Massive smile on my face today and can't get off it. All was sorted on warranty as well so double bonus. Thanks for all the help.
