998 Petrol Leak From Tank Connector 58840111a

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by AirCon, Jul 28, 2014.

  1. Took the bike for an MOT and noticed a very small drip each time the machine was turned off.
I agreed with the tester that we better have a look, unfortunately either a heavy hand (or time) cracked the black connector. We didn't notice at first so we thought it was the O-ring. Replaced this and the leak was worse. Tried to remove the connector (with an oversized o-ring; only thing to hand at the time) resulted in the connector breaking off in-situ!!!
Now I had a full tank of fuel that just kept leaking. Eventually removed the broken part.

Well £56.31 lighter courtesy of Protwins (the only people in the South to have the part in stock and who suggested this option) I have a repair solution. Note these parts look very fragile. I note from USA Ducati sites that they can get a stainless steel set, two male and two female parts for around $59, under 1/4 of the cost of the plastic ones from Ducati.

Special note on the 998 these connectors are not available as separate part.
They try to make you buy a fuel line assembly for about £200.
The reason is that the aforementioned connector is heat shrunk on.
Ignore that and replace the whole hose (use good quality clips, they type you use top cutters to lock) and use the OEM Ducati part number 58840111A for the black or 58810121A for the White connector, as per the 916-996 bikes.

    Hope this helps someone else.

If anyone can tell me of somewhere in the UK I can buy the Stainless replacement kit I'd be grateful.

  2. Hopefully DD on here will pick this up, this is a known problem have always checked and routed my hoses carefully as if not fully in repose then leak and even fracture as you have found, can result.

  3. Actually they're chrome plated brass, made by CPC (same people that make the OEM plastic parts) and you can get them from Tom Parker Ltd, Preston: Hydraulic Fittings, Pneumatic Fittings, John Guest Speedfit and Hydraulic Hose

    The parts are;
CPC - LCD10004v = Metal female with viton 'O' ring
CPC - LCD23006v = Metal male with viton 'O' ring
They are the NPT threads not the BSP as used on some Triumphs.

Note; make sure they have 'v' suffix as these have (fuel resistant) Viton 'O' rings or they will swell and start leaking, this is particularly important for the female part as the 'O' ring is internal and you have to remove the fitting from the tank to replace it.

Mine had the non Viton and when the 'O' ring in the female part swelled it blocked the fuel flow and I ended up stranded - took a while to figure out what was wrong.

When I phoned Tom Parker's they didn't have the Viton version in but you can get the non-viton and some Viton 'O' rings if this is the case as they are easy enough to swap when the fitting is in your hand.

The male versions 'O' rings get easily damaged in use and it is wise to swap them when servicing the fuel filter etc. as they are cheap enough.

When you fit the female fitting into the tank, do not try to screw it in all the way as the threads are tapered and it will get tight enough to snap the fitting.

You probably don't need a sealant but I used 'slic-tite' although PTFE tape will also be good, also you can remove the release buttons by releasing the spring underneath (but be careful it doesn't fly across the room) so that you can get a socket on the fitting but ensure you tighten it to a point that the button is still accessible.

  4. This has been discussed before, the 998 fuel pump assembly apart from the lines is the same as the 78-9** series as far as I can remember.

This was featured on the old Ducati forum quite some time ago. All the fittings are available from Tom Parker Ltd and they are by far the cheapest that I have seen. I have dealt with Tom Parker and they are efficient and reliable, they also do the correct Oteker clips for sealing the fuel lines, certainly for 748's etc. Can't say I have checked a 998 though.

Here's what was written as reply.

"Spot on but for the tank fittings make sure you get the 1/4"MNPT thread (cLCD100-04) not the 1/4"BPST (cLCD100040) and make sure they have the Viton internal 'O' rings (suffix 'V' on part no.). The hose fittings need to be 3/8" fitting, again with Viton 'O' rings.

Ive searched for the full info regarding this on all the ducati web sites and never really got the complete information in one thread. So adding togetther what was allready here coupled with a few enquiries this is what i came up with.

They are advertised on ebay from a hong kong dealer, but i felt you run the gauntlet with import etc.

You can use triumph supplied ones but i banged my head against the wall with their parts dept at two dealers, but they may still be a good source.

A company called CPC make both the plastic (std Ducati) and the better chromed brass connectors.
The UK importer for these is Tom Parker ltd in preston tel 01772255109"

    "the part numbers required are

    2 x cLCD100040V the tank side
    2 x cLCD230-06V the fuel pipe side

they cost from there approx £14 each part"

Here is a link to Tom Parker.

Tom Parker Ltd, Preston: Hydraulic Fittings, Pneumatic Fittings, John Guest Speedfit and Hydraulic Hose

Tom Parker Ltd, Preston > CPC Plastic & Brass Couplings > Brass > CPC Fuel Line Couplings > Brass Coupling Body - Pipe Thread - Valved - Male Thread

Tom Parker Ltd, Preston > CPC Plastic & Brass Couplings > Brass > CPC Fuel Line Couplings > Brass Coupling Body - Elbow - Valved - Hose Barb

So they are still listed and a fraction of what anyone else might charge to my knowledge and probably more sturdier than the originals.

Looks like I was beaten to it!

  5. i remember reading somewhere that the metal connectors from a triumph 955i will fit on a 916.

  6. See above, agreed but does anyone know part numbers etc.

  7. The parts are;
cLCD100-04v Metal female with standard O-ring £14.89 each (this is the tank part)
It's no longer available with Viton O-rings, so you you must buy this separately
    c731104 - Viton O-ring for above £0.87each

cLCD230-06V - 90° Fuel Line Coupling with Viton seal £16.64.
I'm waiting on the part number for the spare viton seals.

    Postage and VAT extra.

  8. Probably just the pipe side, not the tank as the threads are different.

  9. I thought only certain grades of PTFE tape was suitable for 100% immersion in Petrol.
This is not a fact, just something at the back of my mind. Tried to google it and found both answers (so one is wrong).
Hence the stuff used on gas is 5 times the cost of the plumbers ptfe tape (what most of us have at home).

  10. This is why I used slic-tite Slic-tite® Paste with PTFE | LA-CO but I know people who have used PTFE tape without any bother.

  11. The female fitting that Triumph use is the BSP thread so no good for a Ducati which use the NPT, the male push-in fitting is probably the same but there are different sized hose fittings available so check first.

BTW you can mix and match the OEM plastic fittings with the replacement metal fittings.
