Hi Guys Took the 916 for MOT yesterday failed because no kph displayed on speedometer and lights kicking the wrong way. Can you adjust the lights ? and what can i do about the speedo. The bike has passed its mot in mainland UK every time this is the first time in NI.
fella on here from N.I had same prob with speedo cant remember his name do a search on removing swinging arm bolt from 916 that will get you his name was on regular up until a few months back
Should the Speedo not be in mph as that is the law in Northern Ireland and I say if you rang BIlly at Millsport, he would advise on lights.
Cheers lads for the info. I also thought mph was ok but NI you have to display both MPH and KPH from any vehicle 1984 on, load of Bo--ocks no problem in Mainland UK. I work in Poland and have a 750ss with KPH only and thought it would only be a matter of changing to MPH but it will also have to be changed to both Bo--ocks again.
That maybe so but 916 models didn't get a dual scale speedo until much later (probably 998 models?), all the early models had MPH or KPH. A stick-on overlay should be sufficient but I think the tester is being a tad anal. As for the headlight there is a small reflector plate inside the beam unit that needs to be swapped, the 'right-hand drive' version is the mirror image of the LHD version. Looks like this;
Thanks for the info got a 998 speedo second hand from netherlands both mph and kph. Just a tad Anal ???? A total prick 100%
I think he hates Bikers i actually think he got a kick out of Finding there was no Dual mph and kph on clock. One of his colleagues was shacking his head with embarrassment
When I took the Laverda for its MoT this year the tester said the lights dip the wrong way. I was expecting loads of problems, but he just cut two small bits of black sticky-tape, stuck them on the lenses and passed it no problem. Guess my local MoT tester is less opf a dick than yours...
Same thing my mot tester does, a bit of tape to flatten the beam. He marks on the mot paperwork that a beam deflector was fitted, and then lets me put the tape in his bin on the way out, it was legal at the time of test
Are the road signs in Km/KMH in the Republic? I can't remember noticing last time I was there, and I wasn't driving. That's the only rational explanation I can see for NI having a different rule from the mainland.
Why not build a mirror image of the current reflector out of an old Coke can for the MOT. As for the MPH/KPH thank Eire for using Metric, just in case you decide to go south of the border. Sounds like a job for some clear sticky back plastic and black or white letraset to make an overlay.
Last time I drove there the distance signs were in both km and m, mostly in km but some remote signs were still in miles which could be confusing when the next sign on the way to somewhere showed a bigger number than the previous despite being closer. Maybe they've updated them all by now though?...
"No good for oncoming traffic tho" To be honest, the lights on the Laverda are so dim that it makes very little difference... About as bright as two damp candles !
