Exvl error

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by johnnysneds, Sep 24, 2012.

  1. Hi,

Just received my NEW 2012 Multistrada. Im getting the EXVL ERROR on key on. I have removed the heatshield and checked the flapper valve for operation. The valve is free to rotate. I have seen from other videos during key on the valve should be in the fully anti-clockwise position then it will rotate fully clockwise and then rotate under spring pressure back to the fully anti-clockwise position. My one as can be seen from the videos is in the fully clockwise position before key on. After key on it will try and move a small amount then thats it no further movement. I can manually rotate the valve anti-clockwise and can hear the servo unwinding as I do this. When I key on again the servo will pull the valve around to the fully clockwise position again and stay there.
I believe the fault is with the servo or ECU and not the flapper valve as it is free to rotate quite easily and the spring pressure feels sufficient to rerun the cable.
I know its easy to state "just take it back to the dealer" but I can i live in Thailand and dont have this option locally. Has anyone else had this fault and is there anything that can be checked? Could something be around the wrong way, servo, cable...?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cheers
    Johnny

  2. Have you tried to disconnect the bowden cable and checked if it is grinding or get stuck etc? Check both ends of it. If it is in good shape, then there must be something wrong with the servomotor as you said. Checked the electrical connector for the servomotor?

How did you buy the bike? I see that it has the PIN code sticker on the dash, so I estimate that you got it shipped new to you from a dealer? Talk with them and send them the info and videoes you have here. Maybe they will send you a new servomotor? It is a PITA to change, but you can do it with basic tools. But you have to have acces to Ducati diagnostic tool to have the fault deleted from the bikes ECU. Good luck:upyeah:

  3. As Andreas as stated, disconnect the bowden cable from the exhaust valve, and check that the exhaust valve is not sticking, and the cable is not binding or stuck, it is quite hard to pull the cable to actuate the motor. Try the ignition on procedure with the cable disconnected to see if it works then. i did have a situation when i changed my exhaust were the cable became dislogged at the servo end, and it was a real pig to get back in ! The EXVL warning light will go off once you get it working correctly without the Ducati diagnostic tool.

    Hope this helps you...

  4. Yes, the EXVL warning will disapear from the dash (when the fault is fixed) but you have to use the diagnostic tool to delete the fault from the bikes computer. It will not interupt the bikes function, but I like it with no faults stored:biggrin: And if Johnnysneds does`t get it fixed, reading the bikes sensors with the diagnostic tool, vould be the next step finding the fault..

  5. can someone explain how to disconnect the cable from the valve ? (do you mean the cable that is winded round the spring)

also does disconnecting the cable make the error disappear - is this the method to always have it open ?

will disconnecting the cable leave the exhaust port open or closed ?

    bugs

  6. You disconnect the cable at the valve end by turning the valve clock wise until it stops. You must overcome the spring force to keep it there. Then you get a slack in the cable and you just lift the end of from the groove in the valve. The valve is held naturaly open from the force of the spring. The EXVL error will still accure.

  7. ok understand how to remove cable now.

I take it the exhaust port stays closed ?

  8. OK found the cable in the incorrect slot at the servo end pulley which was only able to operate the valve one way. This job is an absolute pain to get it fitted the correct way, even needed the wife's extra pair of hands to get in there and help.
Anyway the valve is being motored in one direction and returned under spring tension no problem now, and the ERROR has gone, happy days.
Many thanks for all of the advise. Out tomorrow to break her in.
Is the Ducati diagnostic tool readily available to the public? cost?

    Cheers
    Johnny

  9. Ahh, very nice! Good it was not a bigger problem than that:upyeah: No, the Ducati diagnostic tool is only avalible for dealers. Cost is around 8000- 10000£....

  10. Hi Johnny, I have the same issue. Just wondering which slot on the pulley is the correct one? Can you clarify it a bit more?

  11. I have this error intermittently. Is it OK to ride with this error until my mechanic comes back from holiday in a week's time?

  12. Jimbo, depends whether it leaves the valve closed or not. If it is closed then you will find the bike feels flat above about 6k rpm as the back pressure stops the engine breathing correctly.

    If it's intermittent then I wouldn't worry.
If it's a permanent fault then I would try to avoid riding it if you can. It won't do any damage, just make it ride like crap.

    Hth.

  13. Thanks John - super helpful. Would I be talking nonsense if I said that you can hear the valve actuate as part of the power up sequence? I'd almost swear that i didn't hear something (exhaust valve I guess) when I get the error message but I might be imagining it.

STOP PRESS: having actually bothered to watch the videos above it is the same noise I hear during power up.

  14. If you have intermittent problem I would recommend to disconnect the valve. You will have the error all the time but at least the valve will be open. Remove the heel plate and disconnect the cable to the valve and reinstall the heel protector again. This way you can drive without any problems.

  15. To all those suffering with this exhaust valve error, my advice would be to just get rid of the thing altogether. It serves no useful purpose being there only to allow the bike to pass the noise emissions test. It causes more problems than it's worth.
There's plenty of advice on this forum about how to deactivate/remove/bypass the valve and the associated errors.

  16. I fully agree. Get a rexxer remap it eliminates the valve and smoothens the ride. Best investment you can make.
