748 Yellow 748 Stolen This Morning

Changing the date of first registration could cause confusion for future owners. If it is a 1998 bike that's great. Some say they are superior to the post 2000 bikes. For value it is the mileage that matters.

 

I'm hazarding a guess that '748 carbodies' has something to do with the import 'paperwork'. I wouldn't necessarily read too much into it, unless it's some sort of scam to 'hide' a stolen vehicle, whilst shipping. And then re-register it when it 'arrives'. I'm just thinking aloud, but would be interested to know if there is someone in Cyprus who is 'missing his 748'?

Having said that, I'm sure it's all perfectly innocent.

Does it have the adjustable headstock?

 

Hi Darren, check to the rear right hand side of the headstock top and bottom for two eccentric adjuster screws. If present that would possibly indicate that is indeed an S. Photies?

 

The headstock is adjustable, you can tell by the photos, only later models had the fixed headstock.

It looks to be a stock Biposto, earlier type with 40mm calipers. Mudguard is non standard.

Assuming original parts it looks like a '98 (only 'Ducati' on the fairing, no '748 Desmoquattro') Biposto. If so it will have single-phase electrics (2 yellow wires to reg/rec) and adjustable steering head (which it appears to have).

Later models got 'cheapened' by doing away with the adjustable head, Dzus fasteners and a few other penny-pinching techniques. The 'S' in the frame number doesn't mean 'S' model, they all have that S to denote the type of bike.

Looks to be in good condition...

 

I hope I am correct. Look at the bracket where the steering damper fits. There are two fitting points and I believe that on the adjustable dteering head models they are both threaded whereas on the fixed frame models only one is.

 

You can also tell by the calipers that this is an early model. The first "E" models were around W registration and although they were not named as such they did have more modern brake calipers, they had no visible fastenings and the ones they used instead were silver.

 

In the side view I can see the eccentric locking screw on the side of the headstock, that plus the 40mm calipers, round hole discs and less logo'd fairing (has extra stickers though) show it to be a '98 plus, I think the bronze frame was changed to grey shortly after?
