1997 Ducati 748s I have been trying for a couple days to stop my clutch slipping, i found the previous owner had changed the levers to short ones, but the adjuster screw was engaging the clutch a little causing it to slip. I changed position of the adjuster screw and stopped the clutch slip, only problem is i cant engage neutral in one go, it takes about 5 attempts goes into neutral sometimes not engaging the neutral light, small tap on the pedal pops the light on. I have tried small increments 1 turn, half turn and just cannot get a balance I even tried stiffer springs and different clutch plates Any help or thoughts would be great
Selecting on the move is easier, however I find that keeping the clutch pack height a little under the specified 38mm setting helps. Also, and especially if you have an aftermarket (20-30% less effort etc.) slave cylinder then make sure the lever is on it's largest span so that you get enough lift/plate separation - both of mine have a larger slave, get around 2mm of lift/plate separation and with a pack thickness of just under 38mm I have no problems finding neutral at a standstill.
great, thank you all for your help, standard slave, i am going to fit a bigger one soon, are the Oberon slaves the best? I think the new fluid and a good bleed will help a lot, i have it just about perfect now but quite hard in traffic, finding neutral was always fine at a certain setting, but allowed the clutch to slip, i have just about found a nice balance now Thanks again for all your help
Changed all the fluid today, helps a lot, a little more travel in the clutch movement. Fluid was dark too, now nice and clear
Yep, I will have a read up on that find out all the info, I think I have the tool in the Ducati bag Is it like adjusting the head stock in terms of movement of a ring?
Stack height and/or overheated/bent friction plates and/or bleed the clutch install new fluid. Surely an oversized slave makes it worse! The issue is engine drag on the gear box making it harder to find/select neutral
Yes it is. Pretty straightforward. Don't over torque the 2 nuts that tighten the hub up when you finish.
Q: when was the clutch last serviced? Stripped, plates checked for blue_ing, flatness, friction plates checked for wear or contamination. This wear includes notching on the "cog" outer and basket wear .Stack rebuild _ check height. This is a skills based thing, just working as an engineer from a workshop manual won't do. Where are you in the UK? If near Bristol then Luigi Moto or a good reputation main dealer. Ask on here for you local guru. I know enough that its cheaper for me to let an expert do it. And I've got the tools and knowledge to do most things on a duke.
I know what you mean.. I did remove and check all the plates, I even changed the springs and plates just to see, but these were off my old torched 748 I think the problem could be the short levers, not as much travel as originals even on the highest setting.. The problem is fixed now with adjustment and changing fluid, it's just a very fine line between slipping or not slipping and hard neutral. Right at this moment it's perfect I will be adding a Oberon slave next month too
Those bigger slaves gave me nothing but trub, some people like 'em, I didn't. You may find your elusive neutral problems may return!
