Started off as a normal oil/filters change. Filter was to tight to remove, the larger pressed steel bowl started rotating on the top engine end section. It was never coming off !!! Thoughts of a total engine removal and crank case split filled me with dread however i had a brain wave and as you can see removed most of the casing, filter elements and spring ! Guess the next stage !! All refitted and running great again the lesson must be NEVER over tighten the filter .....
Would be interested to hear of one falling off ! , at least the oil light would come on and kill the engine, better we have a better filter with a nutted bottom and use a torque wrench !!
My OEM SS one came undone and started to p*ss oil out (it was fitted in a warm weather period....come the winter it was loose)....luckily I was in the process of doing some work on the bike and not riding it.......so I now use the K&N one with the nut on the bottom and wire it up. I think the Ducati ones are nearly all the same type, so you shouldn't have any problems finding the K&N one....besides, it's a much better filter anyway. AL
Or big jubilee clip and lockwire it. Since I stated racing I do this with all of mine now. Come to think of it, since I stated racing I lockwire everything I can!! Lol
By the time the oil light comes on and you turn the engine off, the damage would've already be done. Also if the oil is p!ssing on the exh, it may catch on fire. As bradders says, Jubilee clip and lockwire.
I have since then I never put oil on the o ring and I've never had one come off since I was lucky and notice warm oil everywhere - long before the oil light came back on
Just use the K&N filter.....no ugly Jubilee clip (which when removed, still leaves a potential problem of getting the filter undone) just a nice little nut, lockwired to a fin on the engine....hardly noticeable. As I said, the K&N filter does the filtration and flow job better anyway......I said FLOW-JOB. AL.
The jubilee clip can be used to remove the filter,by giving you something to brace against.A good tap or two with a persuader does the trick.
Long-nose pliers up inside the filter with the ends in opposite holes, a combination spanner ring-end on one handle pushing the other round with the rest of the spanner??
Personally I would always advise smearing oil on both sides of the seal and then as tight as I can by hand. Never known one to weap any oil or come loose. The way that filter is stuck on looks like it was fitted with dry seals possibly. Chris.
G'Day steve do you wipe the new seal with oil before you assemble ? never had this happen to me so maybe you are a little too keen to make sure it does not come off, hand tight only. (I service other peoples cars and 4 times a year on my duc)
They have been filters I have taken off when I firs service a new (to me but secondhand) bike myself. Suspect they were both dry and over tightened.
I use a Flo Stainless oil filter . Its washable , used for race use and has a lockwire tag. As well as a nut to tighten it.
I had a holed filter on my CBR 600. A stone flicked up and chipped the paint, then some winter riding rusted the filter through. started off as a weird splattering of oil on the exhaust and belly pan, turning into a line of drips when the bike parked up, that got progressively worse. it was the oddest thing to see, not one point were it was dropping, but a perfectly straight line.
Had an oil filter with a nut on mine. Put the spanner on, gave it a tweak.......and off popped the nut, leaving three spot weld holes in the bottom of the air filter
Did you find a Uk importer of these or was it US via flee bay ? they look good to me as got cooling fins !
