998 998 Spray On Screen After A Long Run

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Dr.D, Oct 28, 2014.

  1. Hi all,
After a run, I have a fine spray of fluid, I presume to be brake fluid on my screen above the front master cylinder ( above right on screen above bars . It is not all the time, but after a long run, I think possibly when braking heavier, I don't notice it when say just popping out to put petrol in.
I thought it was possible the reservoir cap not on properly ( tricky to get to with screen in place ), or rubber perished... Nothing much... However my dad decided throw a cat amongst the pigeon and say well it shouldn't pressure in the master cylinder and spray fluid out even if it not on properly it must be over pressurising and have your whole brakes system checked.... Anyone have any ideas? I was just going to replace a cap / rubber and all would be good but now he worries me, and I will need a trip to the dealer / garage?
My bike ride and stops perfectly fine.
    Cheers

  2. Are you sure its brake fluid ? Could it be antifreeze from your header tank when hot. I presume the 998 has the same plastic header tank as the 748/916 which are prone to cracking.

  3. As above, sounds like the coolant tank.

  4. Cheers guys, I am not much for a mechanic, ( although steadily learning bits and pieces ) where and how do I check this coolant tank, which seems to be the culprit.
    Cheers

  5. The tank is located around the headstock in front of the ignition barrel, they tend to crack on the seams although mine went at the bottom of the filler neck, try getting it up to temperature when the fan cuts in and have a look.

  6. Thanks Steve, fingers crossed this is it.

  7. My last one failed between the filler and the side outlet and when the bike got really hot sprayed a mist over the inside of the screen and my hand.

I had several fail; 3 in the space of a few months and one of them leaked from the outset - I got this one replaced FOC by the dealer but another dealer told me "no warranty" when I had a failure after a few weeks - not exactly confidence filling.

I gave up with the OEM tank a few years back and replaced it with a custom aluminium jobbie and have had no more problems...

  10. The mist on the screen is how I realized mine had split

  11. A sprinkle of talcum powder should show where any fluid is leaking from. ;)

  13. Header tank...let me know if it is as have a few for sale.

  14. The header tank is the same as any 748/9*6 model only the sensor unit on the early bikes is not mounted on this model.

  15. Taste it
