hi guys im after a mag swing arm for my 748 track project,doesnt have to be mint but must be in full working order, cheers.
You should aware that there are at least 2 varients of the magnesium swing arm. The factory racing 748 did not use the later 996 swing arm which puts the shock absorber attachment point slightly further back on the swing arm. Be aware of the issue that has with spring rate and valving. There are a few swing arms around that were made for a European supersport series where the shock absorber attachment mirrors the stock position which from memory is 110mm from the pivot. Magnesium components are Marmite on this forum with advocates and abject antis. Whatever their opinion everyone recognises that you need to have evidence of non destructive testing BEFORE you buy or agree that it is done BEFORE you hand over cash. I have run a magnesium 748 swing arm on 2 track bikes without problem and use Steve Turner of TPCS to maintain it. I have also seen a couple of bikes using carbon swing arms which are slightly rarer. There was a degree of debate as to why I set my track bike up the way I did but having ridden a stock 748sp based geometry bike and a 748R based racing geometry bike, I love my 748R way more. Andy

From my perspective, yes. To make a difference though you need the 23.5 degree steering angle set up plus a 30mm (ish) off set triple clamp so it's not just fitting the longer swing arm. If your budget is restricted, you would be better off spending on the front fork and rear shock set up with the right spring weights and internal valves and a decent pair of light weight wheels. This will transform the handling more noticeably than the longer swing arm. If you want better engine performance consider an 853cc conversion which I found on my 748sp based track bike made better torque and a flatter power curve - 100 hp at 7000 through to 112 at 11500 maxing 83 lbs ft torque delivered silky smooth. Oh yes, don't forget to upgrade the brakes. Andy
cheers andy, ive put my carbon/mag dymags on there already, had ohlins internals put in the front and serviced the rear ohlins shock by mh racing, also got the engine out as we speak as jeff green is doing the 853 conversion later this month.
A chap i know at moto 46 Moto 46 Race & Track Supplies Lincolnshire | Robby Moto Quick Action Throttles, Cordona Quickshifters, Technoflex Suspension, Forcefield Body Armour, Lincolnshire, UK sells the longer modified arms for £500...much better option if you ask me. He has a deal with Harris to undertake the work for him, who apparently used to do alot of this work back in the day.
Or just contact Harris yourself and cut out the middle man? I know he works on an exchange basis though.
Good luck as the magnesium swingarms don't seem to come up for sale so much these days.If you want magnesium then I think Febur still sell them but new prices are quite steep.You could try posting up a thread the same as this on ducati ms in the US see what there members have as lots of em wordwide. There is also a carbon version from Dymag but they are rare as rocking horse shite.Think BST were manufacturing these also but probably top end budget prices. As android said id definitely budget for some aftermarket yokes/triple clamps ,rear shock modifications and the all important corse top rocker .Those Harris extended standard swingarms look pretty bloody good to me.Do they require the corse top rocker also ?.
