Did they tell you what they did? I got another ECU but it wasn't the problem, now think it is a bad earth from the front coil - which is what 10.2 means, I should've tried that earlier!
Not as yet, I'll find out tomorrow though. I mentioned the 10.2 scenario and they said it could be just a faulty earth somewhere in the loom. I hope so, rather than the Ecu thing. I'll update tomorrow. Nick
I just had a call from the garage, they said everything points to the Ecu being faulty. Have done all they can aside from replace it. Do you want to sell your new one Geemsee, or could you let me know where you got it from? Thanks.
I tried a second earth from the front coil but it made no difference, I've decided Ducati electrics are beyond me so I'm going to take it to someone that knows something. Basically now the EOBD light is on all the time and if I do get a code it shows the dreaded 10.2 - other times it shows no code, just the light! I'm not sure if I haven't damaged both ECU's now so would be best to source another one, EBay seems to have a fair few and then maybe get someone clever (ie Chris W) to virginise and flash a 749 Map onto it For mine I'm still hopeful it's just a bad earth somewhere!
Hi Pavey, I thought I'd update you; I was continuity testing my front coil wiring and I think I've found my problem. One of the three wires to this is broken. I'm fairly certain it's not the earth (black middle wire) as I've already bypassed that. So it's likely to be either the brown/white or grey/blue. I worked it out by starting the bike and wiggling the wire (thanks Ducati.MS forum!), in one position fine in another one cylinder only and EOBD light shining! Now I just need to find out which and replace it (as I ran out of time today) and I think I'm sorted, will post on here once I am sure! I guess with the current running through this it might have been sensible to wear rubber gloves but didn't get a shock anyway! Just thought I would give a big thanks to Chris W for all the advice and tips as to be honest otherwise I'dve given up days ago without this!
Sorry I should've added that when I stripped back the crappy insulation tape all three wires looked a bit flattened or pinched in places, so I think they must've got jammed against the engine or frame between the fairing vee and or side panel somehow?!
Well found Geemsee. Result! Don't worry about getting a shock from the wires, they only carry 12v with a tiny current. The high voltage stuff is found inside the coil pack so unless you stick your finger in it whilst it's doing it's job you will be fine.
Nice work mate, glad you have it sorted, or at least pinpointed. Mine turned out to be Ecu failure. Chris let me know I could use ecu's from later bikes, which he then flashed and hey presto, back on the road (after a belt change, major service, leaking rockers and new clutch plates and basket). Took the front number board and rim tape off my bike so it is totally black now and love it, best looking bike in the road (imo). Looking forward to my first commute for a while on it tomorrow morning.
Yeah Chris was a big help, I got a later 1098 ECU off him with a DP map flashed onto it (it wasn't the actual problem with my bike but seemed to be at the time) anyway once I get her running (awaiting new clutch plates) and test ridden I might have a play around with JPDiag and try a few different maps/settings... or not, depends. At least they sorted your problem with the ECU and they aren't stupidly expensive if you get them second-hand. I ended up cutting about 8" off the wiring loom (side branch to front coil) and using a later coil with the fly-lead (also about 8" long) to replace the corresponding section of wiring, also required a new Bosch connecter which was easy enough to fit. All went together ok the connector is now located just behind the r/h cooling fan, clipped to the top of the battery box.
Just a quick update; clutch plates finally arrived and fitted easily enough, then the inevitable clutch drag as the stack depth seemed to be on the upper side of 38mm, so swopped out a couple of the new friction plates for the less munted old ones and it worked fine - I will swap the new ones back when it's bedded in. Took it for a test ride and ran perfectly, I'm loving the extra go from the DP Map (thanks again Chris W!!) pulls like a train and no sign of EOBD's even at silly revs! Jusy need to source a lower right belly pan now to replace my melted one and she'll be ready for summer!
