Usa And Cuba.

  1. So why have the USA suddenly decided to improve relations with Cuba after al these years?

Am I just being cynical and thinking that while Putin is behaving as he is, does the USA think it's time they got a military foothold in Cuba to stop Putin doing what the Russians did in the 60s?

Be interesting to get hold of some of the old glamour era cars that still drive around in Cuba though.

  2. If you like complete and utter rust buckets. The nostalgia really works overtime there.

  3. yip tit for tat.

  4. The Russians won't put missiles in Cuba. They can't get them there, they can't afford the fuel.

  5. I am surprised that anybody remembers the Cuban " crisis " of the '60s,, an issue of America securing its borders which drew fairly widespread acceptance back then,, but when Russia does the same it gets general mainstream media condemnation,,, of course lets not forget who owns the mainstream media.

  6. Nobody remembers The Bay of Pigs crisis?

    F-me.........I'm older than I thought.

  9. Trying equate The Cuban Missile crisis with Putin's current shenigans shows a distinct lack of understanding of politics.

You're much better off comparing the Iraq War of 2003 and the US presence in Afghanistan with Russia's moves in Chechnya and Ukraine.

  10. I see nothing in my OP that suggests I was comparing anything.........after all, Putin doesn't look anything like Khrushchev.

  11. The Russians like furry hats

  12. I don't see anything like that in your OP, Al, either. And Putin looks like a naughty schoolboy compared to the Banger of Shoes :)

I'm aware of the Bay of Pigs incident but as there was not a trace of bacon involved, it didn't hold my interest.

  13. bay of pigs was nothing to do with missile crisis,,,, how much has USA been paying the puppet government in Ukraine, ?? how much are they prepared to pay to get NATO arms onto Russian border,, you cant see a similarity to the " missile crisis " ?? i dont believe you .

  14. Planning for the invasion began in 1960, before diplomatic ties with Cuba had been broken. The situation was delicate, since the plan was to overthrow a government with which the United States was not at war. Various aspects, including propaganda and military strategies, were included in the plan, along with the directive that the U.S. should not appear to be involved.
The failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion set the stage for further aggressions against Castro from his northern aggressor. President Kennedy made little effort to conceal his continued desire to see Castro deposed. Castros insecurity about the future of his rule over Cuba led to the installation of Soviet nuclear missiles there, prior to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.

  15. Fella invertiewed, some yanky spokesman, on radio 4 yesterday was ip in arms that the us govt would agree any terms with these terrorists

  16. so true Arq,,,a " delicate situation " .. how somethings never change..

  17. The nearest example I can think of to The Cuban Missile Crisis was the preceding crisis when the US placed ICBMs in Turkey. Those were very similar scenarios, i.e. missile bases placed practically next door to the enemy's homeland. Agreement on Cuba was reached via a US U-turn on Turkey.

The reason they were similar scenarios is because the presence of ICBMs in Cuba, or Turkey, meant that the balance of power represented by M.A.D was totally knocked off-kilter. ICBMs placed so close to the enemy (first , in Turkey, then in Cuba) meant that there would have been almost no warning of an imminent missile attack. The only logical response to this strategy would have been a first-strike, by the USSR in Turkish crisis or by the USA in The Cuban crisis. This was a very dangerous time for Humanity, because disastrous escalation of hostilities was a matter of heartbeats away.

Comparing these situations with the US invasion of Iraq or the Russian invasion of Ukraine is, frankly, a little daft.

  18. I'm not comparing them...............just making tongue in cheek comments as per usual.......
