I trying to split the engine cases on my 796 two valve.. Working a little blind it must be said ... It's been going great but a bit stuck now.. I was hoping to only fully remove everything from the clutch side and then part the two sides.. Primary gears etc are all removed and all the crank case bolts i can find .. Starters removed along with magneto etc.. I'm just not sure if I can indeed part the clutch half away without removing the flywheel etc.. The gears pictured are now removed since this was taken.. Both H and V barrels are off along with their pistons .. Advice welcomed.. Gratefully..
Long time since I split a gearbox open; and never done a ducati... Got a photo of what the other side looks like??
Not sure if you can split the cases without removing the flywheel. I had to split the cases on my superlight engine to replace the crankshaft gallery plug. I would recommend completely stripping everything, because checking/adjusting the main bearing preload during re-assembly is critical, and the flywheel has to be removed to do that. That said, I might be wrong, I'm sure someone on the forum will correct me.
Certainly on 4 vave engines one of the hardest jobs is removing the primary gear and you need the correct tool to do is as it is very tight. Whether it's as hard on a 2 valve I don't know. The alternator side should be fully dismantled as well. Finally as mentioned above crankshaft main bearing preload must be set as accurately and as finely as possible as that is one of the critical jobs upon rebuilding. Correctly adjust the gearchange mechanism.
Hi Red The primary gear was amazingly tight, sitting on a tapered shaft.. Ok so alternator off two.. And then I shall need to learn about preload... What was that about the gear change mech?
Just make sure it is adjusted correctly internally otherwise you won't get clean gearchanges. It's hard to explain in words but there are some measurements\adjustments to the internal shift mechanism that need to be correct. You will need a manual or a list of settings to use the right figures. This is the mechanism of a 4 valve, possibly the same\similar on your engine.
Yep.. I've got the official Ducati CD for mine so it will be there somewhere.. I really need someone experienced my way to go to and check things when need be.. Eg Ipswich area..
I'd agree, there are a few things that if you get them wrong will compromise the build and a strip and rebuild to rectify will be expensive as gaskets etc. are not cheap. You could consider getting someone to just build the crank and gearbox into the cases and adjust and then finish the rest off yourself. That way might save you some money. For complicated stuff I use Ducati John Ducati John and although he is in Leeds I have found him to be one of the best, he is knowledgeable and amenable and does very good work at a decent price. For peace of mind you need to know it's 100% right.
You also need to remove the two allen headed bolts in your pic. One just to left of belt pukkey in pic and one just to left of mainshaft in pic
Yep that's what I did Red. I took my cases, crankshaft and gearbox to Baines racing Silverstone. They fitted it all and charged me only 40 quid. While I was there I ordered all the parts I needed, and got some good advice to finish the rebuild as well. @Noods, Baines is quite a distance from you, but they stock all the parts and it might work out cheaper for you. You've also got Rosso Corse just off the Mile end road in east London. I've used them before.
