I am indeed fortunate to know that a fool thinks himself to be a wise man whereas a wise man knows himself to be a fool. That knowledge informs the the questions I ask and my respon I am indeed fortunate to know, as Touchstone says in Shakespeare's As You Like It, that a fool thinks himself to be a wise man whereas a wise man knows himself to be a fool. That knowledge informs every questions I pose and my responses to any answers that are forthcoming. I take on board what you have said about your now absent online "friends". But are you talking about members barred and suspended for aiming vile abuse at me? Are you really defending Ronin's right to compare me unfavourably to a person with learning difficulties and indeed to describe an unfortunate human being with that disability as a "window licker". Or Cranker's right to abuse me just because we disagreed over something. Ttonup seems to be cut from the same cloth but manages to stop short of spouting abuse. These are people who resort to invective when their opinions are questioned because they appear unable to express themselves in a more civilised way and I am surprised that you take the time to defend them because I would not have thought you would give them the time of day. Being offended is just a pretty way of saying you don't like something someone has said. Well, you know what, everyone should suck it up. If my opinion "offends anyone" I would fight to the death for them to tell me that and why that is so and why it gives them to react in a palpably uncivilised way. What we learn from others helps to inform our own opinions ... but they are just that - opinions - and if you are offended by them, you choose to be. You TAKE offence. You are not FORCED to be offended at gunpoint. The clue is in the verbs. I don't like lots of things but am I offended by them? No, because that's a waste of energy. If you don't like something, argue against it in a cogent manner on a personal level and if necessary and appropriate try to change it through the ballot box. That's how things work here. But I am sure you know that. I once aired an opinion on a heavy metal band in a concert review and had dog shit sent to me in the post. If the person responsible had written to me I would have submitted his/her response for publication. I respect the law - which has constrained my work probably more than most people's - not because it is right all the time, but because society would descend into chaos without it and it has been arrived at in a democracy that respects the opinions of others. We only have to look to other areas of the globe to see that that is what happens when human beings are not constrained by a generally accepted and humane set of laws and codes of behaviour. Sorry if I am teaching my grandmother to suck eggs. I have not set out to be patronising but some of your responses - and the responses of others (now banned or absent) - have had me questioning whether we are all on the same page on this. Meanwhile, I'm just about to get back on this!
Shit who nicked the Triumph? Actually, that's my hooligan bike... I mainly ride a 2013 Multistrada these days, as befits a gentleman of my advanced years. And that's not my Diavel. It's a mate's. He's trying to convince me to swap the ST for one.
