Touch Up Pair And Fairing Plastic Washer For 996

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Cream_Revenge, Nov 15, 2014.

  1. Afternoon all.

Any recommendations for red touch up paint and I am also missing a clear plastic washer that goes on the D fastener on the fairing?

    Cheers

  2. call me a heathen but if you have a range of circular gasket hole punches and an old plastic milk bottle then a decent replica washer can be made for nothing and if you make them accurately no-one will ever know ; ) - been doing it for many years. As far as touch up paint, hopefully someone will come along like 'red998' to give you a list. I have forgotten the two I have used in the past and the shades do vary over the years from Ducati plus the effect of sunlight. A google search should bring up the popular two from Halfrauds - one is used on a Nissan maybe? EDIT - they are Ford Radiant red and Nissan red 526 although as others have said, you don't have to be limited to Halfords.

EDIT Here's one but be warned it may still not match despite what seller might say : - Ducati TOUCH UP PAINT rosso red all years FREE UK POST | eBay

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  3. Great tip for the washers Chris.

  4. That's why I love this forum, great washer idea. Thanks.

  5. For the washers buy them from eBay, they are literally pence for 10 or so and you can get them in different thickness's, great for shimming up panels or with the thicker ones great for using them for things like the front V panel where a thicker washer does not distort.

For paint, colour depends on year, but the attached seems to blend with all but the very early bikes. For your bike you can try this, photo below to show the correct code.. This an ICI paint (as you can see!) and requires no lacquer so it's ideal for touch up and full painting of a panel, you can have it made into an aerosol and then spray it into a cap and let it evaporate a bit until you get the right consistency if you just want to use it as a touch up.

This is a 2 pack paint though if spraying using a gun.

Below is the Lechler reference, an alternative, again it can be had in 2 pack and in a solid colour. I have used both and ICI is cheaper.

  6. sorry to be picky but cheapest washers I found were 16p each plus postage - massively overpriced for what they are plus I have mine almost immediately. Each to their own as ever.

  7. Can't imagine I would get through 100 in 5 life times, always nice to have spares handy though.

Just found a crack in the rear fairing about 1 cm long hiding under red insulation tape, I must have really got blinded by the shiny bits to have missed that.

Still, this is why we have winters, so we can make them sparkle again! Mostly, I will be In the shed.

  8. If the plastic is white, as per later models them you can easily have it plastic welded. I have repaired many fairings in the past and never had a problem. It's even possible to let in plastic into areas that have totally worn away in a crash, I use an old scooter panel of the same thickness to replace any fairing parts like the blisters on the right side of the fairing that have totally worn away. It's getting hard to find decent panels for these models now at a good price.

  9. as above, early panels weld very well if you have the patience.

  10. Personally I use hot plastic welding. I have tried cold welding in the past using Plastex and other cold weld products, they have not worked out so well and have broken if not immediately then after a while.

I use this but as you can see it's not cheap Sealey

The gun can be used for other things as my model has 5 different heat settings. I have more than had my money back on this gun just on the panels alone that I have repaired for myself from it let alone the work I have done for others with it.

The cheapest seller of this item is Demon Tweaks at about £119.

  11. I've used that paint recently and it is a slightly lighter shade of red than my existing paint (748. 1998) very close though.

  12. Gets a bit wiffy?

  13. I would say it is reasonable enough as it is getting on for half a litre of ready mixed paint. The main worry (problem) occurs when the aerosol doesn't spray properly. If you have ever bought a cheap £1 type of aerosol and found it to be all over the place and uncontrollable then you will know what I mean.

  14. Try a local motor factor and see what colours they have in stock. The two motor factors that I use both stock Ducati colours although they use different manufacturers systems paints.

ICI is the cheapest and easiest to use as it requires no specialist thinners or hardeners. Some systems like Lechler who did\do supply Ducati have slightly more complicated systems.
