It is illegal to get married to a second wife in the UK while still married to the first wife. But if a person comes to the UK after getting married to more than one wife in a country where this is legal, then that is not in itself illegal. So no, it is not "illegal to have more than one wife in the UK". The question of what benefits a second or third wife might be entitled to is another matter. Even illegal cases of bigamy in the UK are not taken very seriously nowadays. I know of a case where the bigamous husband was given a short prison sentence, but on appeal this was decided to be much too severe; it was replaced by a minor punishment.
Islam demands that too. It's an equal opportunity religion for boys and girls as far as genital mutilation is concerned.
it can be a bit hard to tell, and i am not for giving the dumb an excuse or promote the idea. at the risk of going around in circles, i was questioning the right to insult. not questioning the madness that is "insert any faith here."
Do you still have your head fin ? We haven't heard from you for a while and I was getting worried. Do we need to call the police ?
I think insulting people personally is a bad idea, most of the time, but it is essential for some forms of humour. Moliere is quite insulting to minority interests, but revered as a great playwright. And I would want to reserve my right to insult any faith that calls for the stoning of rape victims and the killing of people who renounce it (apostates). Do Hitter and the Nazis, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao et al richly not deserve our scorn? Militant Islamists are no different just because they hide behind religion. That's why no religion must EVER be made a special case. Religions insult each other and atheists and humanists all the time. Islam is the worst for criticising and mocking other religions: Muslims are the ultimate fascists, as was evidenced on Nicky Campbell's The Big Question on Sunday.
I would like more TV debates on these things. I think that Muslims are often let off the hook. Do Muslims really believe in Sharia law, bigamy, killing apostates and stoning adulterers, or don't they? Maybe less radical Muslims don't. Why not? Why are they Muslim then? This sort of stuff is just continually brushed under the carpet and the phrase "we have no problem with Islam" is constantly parroted. Maybe it's about time we did have a problem with Islam. Just to be clear, you can't stop people admiring Hitler. It's not an offence. What is an offence is proselytising Nazism. I'm not suggesting making Islam illegal, or preventing people going to mosques, if that's their bag. But I don't think that anything should be done which might encourage it.
@johnv still got me head, for all the use it is today, to much diagnostic going on today/last week with very little success
Similarly do bear shit in the woods ? There are probably very few ordinary Muslims who would be prepared to enter into that discussion, even if they hold contrary views. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a successful author married to a successful author, she has the wherewithal to protect herself, but she is still very brave.
But the UK's crazy non-contributory benefits system is certainly something which has some relevance here: Charlie Hebdo terror mentor's wife on benefits in Leicester - Telegraph Benefits for Abu Hamza's family must be reviewed, says MP - Telegraph Jihadists funded by welfare benefits, senior police officer warns - Telegraph Yes, it's the Telegraph (not the Mail) but these items, strangely, never get much prominence via the Guardian or BBC.
No ... but we had loads of other problems. I have to say that I don't miss balancing carbs and resurfacing points! Or flooded carbs! Or split carb diaphragms! Or trying to judge how far to pull out the choke!
Can't get iPlayer here, but it's probably on You Tube. What was the title of the programme? There are a few on there.
Thanks for getting my blood boiling again! They must laugh and mock us for generously supporting and homing our grave enemies amongst us. It beggars belief! Mainstream parties don't seem able to do more than talk. It's why UKIP will gain a good % of popular vote even if they don't get many seats at the next election. They are to me not a viable party but their popularity does change the agenda and forces Tory/Labour to change their policy; Just look at the way they are all now talking tough on immigration. They are thus a very valuable catalyst for change. Let's stop having to apologize for wanting to maintain our British values and way of life while accepting the great benefits and diversity we have, in allowing the right levels and the right immigrants, to come here for a better life and to contribute positively to our society.
i watched that, didnt see anyone condoning murder. i wish he asked the fella outright if he does support it.
If he'd condoned murder on British TV I think he could have been charged or have been subjected to a swift kicking by some Neanderthal BNP supporters. But he was well out of his depth and, as with all zealots (the Christian bloke did it too), didn't listen to other viewpoints and talked over other contributors and the host. The humanist, the jihadist-turned reasonable human being and the MP were the only ones who came out of the show with any credit IMO. Let them have their faiths. But I have no faith that religion can deliver a fair, safe, prosperous society FOR ALL. They are exclusive, niche organisations after all.
