Fellow members, My four old dell model no Inspiron 1564 is no longer letting me log on, It's telling me log failed service failed. Anyway, I showed it to one of the tech guys at work and he tells me I need to save all my files in 'safe mode' and then reboot it with a new disc, problem is I don't have a disc even though I bought it new in the US, does anyone know/have where I can get a disc. It was running Windows 7. Many thanks in advance.

Hi First, do you have recent backups/how important are your files? You may find if you boot in safe mode that things like USB and networking wont work as Safe Mode only gets the basics up and running to repair the machine so you might have problems getting your data off. One option is to remove the HDD and plug it into another machine and copy everything off. To get into Safe Mode keep pressing F8 on boot. Can you post a pic of the error message. G
Hi Andy/Chris Sorry for late response and many thanks for yr help. I have managed to remove my folders to an external hard drive in 'safe mode' but when I try to search for regidit as explained in the attached link no luck. Up until this recent blip the thing was working brilliantly albeit slightly slower. I'm not able to access it in Administrator mode, do I need a windows 7 disc to re programme it, or is there a way of doing it in safe mode. Many thanks
Can you post the login error? It should be "regedit" you need. Find regedit by typing it in the run box. You can find run by pressing the Windows button + r at the same time or by typing run in search.
Chris and other members, The problem is when I'm in safe mode I search for regedit and the nothing happens, whereas in the video it take a him to a page which opens. Sorry guys
Standard user. Also when I try and restore systems and files, it tells me 'No restore points have been created on yr computers system drive'
I believe you will need administrator permissions in order to run regedit. Unfortunately, with your situation, I am unsure how you can put that into effect. It may be possible for you to go into Control Panel > User Accounts and change the User type of your logon identity to that of an Administrator. That should enable you to run regedit, with any luck. If you haven't set up System Restore within Windows, you won't have any Restore Points you can use to repair the damage.
Followed the video, and now logged on. Have backed up all my files. Now I want to clean everything off my computer and reboot it so to speak as it's becoming slow. Used to do it with an XP disc on my old computer, any ideas how I can do it on this one? Thanks everyone so far.
