Stainless Clutch Springs

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Old rider, Jan 22, 2015.

  1. Do stainless springs work as well as oem??

Am thinking of going down the carbon open cover route, as much for the bling factor as anything else.

What has prompted this is a nice new gold DP pressure plate at a good price from the For Sale section of this site.

I want it to be tasteful, so I'm thinking open carbon cover, SS springs, and red caps to go with the gold pressure plate plate.

    Any other suggestions??

  2. Think there will be quite a few on here have them. I've got a set on my 1098 and their fine no probs.

Set I got was advertized as surgical grade SS whatever that means, SS is usually either 304, or 312 as I remember.

The only thing is dependent on the bike model make sure you get the right set. The older bikes had stronger springs and if you install these to the later models, I think 1098 onwards, it will make the clutch super heavy

    That's all I got

  3. Thanks for the advice, my bike's a 999.

The worry is that ferrous steel springs are presumably made of 'spring steel'. What are stainless springs made of ?
    Or is stainless naturally springy?

  4. Stainless has different properties to "plain" steel, so it has to be treated differently to achieve the same properties when you make stainless versions of the springs.
You can do this in all sorts of ways - thickness of the wire, number of coils, coil spread, etc.

  5. Got em on the 748.. got oberon pp,springs, caps and screws thought it best to get all from same supplier hoping to avoid any mismatch and although ive only done 500 miles so far so good

  6. surgical grade is normally 317 ( L ) which is an improvement on the common marine grade 316 ( L ).

  7. I had problems with stainless springs when changing pressure plates as they werent the right length
They had worked fine with the stock pressure plate but once using a different design I had to return to stock to get it to work

  8. worrying, hope DP pressure plate will be ok...

  9. It will be fine... Just ask supplier of springs if they will suit and if they then dont send em back

  10. above approach is right as apart from some aftermarket manufacturers getting them dimensionally wrong sometimes leading to coil-binding, st. steel versions can often be stronger like for like resulting in a heavier action.

  11. I woudnt use a carbon open clutch cover as it gives no protection if bike falls on that side. use an open billet aluminium cover .

  12. Sorry yeah 316 not 312, never heard of 317 before, useful info, cheers

I got a SS set way back and they were the earlier type and I could barely pull in the clutch. Much later I got another replacement set and they have been absolutely fine

  13. here's one I prepared earlier!

  14. Oberon full set of springs, caps and bolts is 36 quid, not bad at all..
Have an Oberon bar end mirror and the quality is outstanding, may have to be the way to go.

  15.

  16. 317 is just 316 with some added CH -Ni - Mo ( chrome , nickel, molibdinum ),, for added environmental resistance.

  17. Ooh, just realised a certain supplier does 'em for rather less... ;)

  19. agree on these parts but don't waste your money on their lightweight wheelnut socket, not sure what they were thinking of.
