  1. I never said there was any need to prove or disprove anything... I just saiod that no-one actually can... :)

  2. That's a bit like saying, "It's impossible for people to suddenly sprout feathers and enormous pecs and then fly away".

Yeah uh, sure, the statement is sort of true but in what way is it actually useful? It's a statement that states nothing.

  3. That's perfectly true. There are a billion other assertions which no-one can prove or disprove too. Being unable to prove something does not have the same truth value as being unable to disprove it; they are not equivalents.

  4. I was tempted to say "of course they are", but to be honest trying to get any sense out of you is obviously a complete waste of time, so I won't bother...

  5. And Loz - it depends where you are coming from and what you are looking at. Does it need a reason ? Does everything need to be useful ?
Some people can admit that they don't know everything, and some can't... But enough of that already ! :)

  6. JR, it can't be "enough already" if you still don't understand! :)

Thought experiment for you - instead of the word "god", use the phrase "inhabitants of a planet entirely populated by Groucho Marx clones".

Now, let's start the conversation over again but use the new term.

Do you get any sense of how ridiculous it might be for someone to say that no one can prove that the entire universe was not created by inhabitants of a planet entirely populated by Groucho Marx clones?

    Are we there yet?

  7. If I may say so, maybe 'ridiculous' is not the clearest way of putting it. To invent a ridiculous proposition to illustrate an argument and then point out that it is ridiculous is not very convincing. Perhaps you meant "meaningless" or "null"?

  8. Already used those terms earlier, Pete. I was looking for a new and fresh angle.

  9. I look at this video of Andromeda and I am completely blown away. Not only does it make my head spin with the scale of the thing, but then I think of that other photo of the night sky - the one of deep space where there is apparently nothing to see and you find that it contains thousands of galaxies: thousands of Andromedas.

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D - YouTube

And then I think of bibilical stories, koranic stories and they are just so banal in comparison. I just don't understand how people can have "faith" unless they haven't spent any time looking at and thinking about the universe. It's completely bonkers.

  10. I know what I mean when I say this, as I feel it sometimes when I am looking into the night sky ...

    That made me feel funny.

  11. Thought experiment for you - instead of the word "god", use the phrase "a force, being or entity beyond our human understanding".
Now, let's start the conversation over again but use the new term.
Do you get any sense of how ridiculous it is for someone to say that the human mind can understand the workings of the entire universe, or to believe that it ever could?

  12. So I cannot prove that a force, being or entity beyond our human understanding didn't create the Universe? Is that what you are saying? LOL.

OK, I'll counter - I say that the force, being or entity that created our Universe *is* within our human understanding. Can you disprove that?

Do you not get the sense now that the idea of anyone needing to disprove things that we do not know is ridiculous? How does anyone disprove that something that we do not know, does or does not exist? It's a meaningless statement.

You cannot disprove the theory that the entire universe is a slice of fairy cake, disguised as a universe. Your move, punk.

Are we there yet? I hope so, because my head is spinning.

  13. It was me!I did it!

  14. Prove it!

  15. You prove I didnt,human!

  19. Do you not understand that I'm not asking you to prove or disprove anything ?
I cannot disprove that the entire universe is a giant slice of fairy cake - and I'm quite happy to say that I can't disprove that fact. I don't believe it, but that's a whole different thing.
I don't claim to know everything: I don't believe that anyone ever could know everything. But, once again, I can't actually prove that... Kind of ironic, isn't it?

  20. I think it's a big piece of fairy cake :)
