I'm certainly not condoning either of those two, or anyone who is consulting for business while they are an MP.
bet you dont. and trust me, you dont do this job at my stage unless you enjoy it. @chizel your probably right, gonna talk about the snp for a mo (sorry) salmond was renowned for maintaining discipline within the party i hope sturgeon can maintain it, i dare say some smart arse could find exceptions , but on several occasions i have heard senior westminster politicians praise him for this fact.
Most assume that the amount a tradesman (mechanic, chippy plumber, sparks) charges an hour is what he earns. Far from it. In-fact if you factor in our overheads and the fact we dont get overtime rates, holiday pay, sick pay or a pension plan and spend a great deal of our spare time pricing work and chasing prospective clients that end up going nowhere our rate aint so good... You should also understand that we work in some of the most dangerous jobs going with accident and fatalities higher than in most sectors and life expectancy a lot lower. most yuppies laugh this off but it is a reality so when you begrudgingly hand over 2,3,4 times an hour what you get paid to a tradesman try and remember he aint doing it for a laugh its how he scrapes a living. yea you see a few flash sparks/plumbers in the pub giving it the large un and some do make a killing as some who play the stock market do but that's the fortunate and more often than not the lucky or dishonest few.
yeah but remember while the other lot were doing it hard for five years at university (when it was free) and not having any fun at all at the expense of mum n dad and the tax payer, you where largeing it on apprentice wages and not having to study, work and pay for tools at all....
deffo, not easy being me and you, up shot.... cant think of one right now, bollox there's plenty.. any one interested in my turnover? 155k last year (more this) guess how much i took home before tax? bearing in mind the long hours (and i never ever get come backs ever. well maybe once.
that is true and if you turn over a mil there is no guaranty that you'll make any profit but if you turn over nil i can guaranty you wont
I don't get sick pay, holiday pay or overtime (unknown even in staff journalism jobs!) for my freelance work either. That's normal. But cash payments are unheard of ...
Yes but you do for your paye work and i guarantee your freelance work is at a higher rate to take into account this.. if not you are a scab and are lowering the wages of others buy not charging accordingly...
PAYE work is four hours a week and I've never gone sick - and I get six four-hour days' paid holiday. Hardly big bananas. I used to work a full day in the office. But they ripped up our contracts and said four hours, at home, for half the money and half the holiday. Take it or leave it.
Actually most of my freelance work is at a lower rate because it's on local newspspers, which pay less. You're living in cloud cuckoo land if you think we set the rates! We are told what we will earn and if it's not acceptable there's always someone else.
holiday pay is based on a percentage of what you work (9% i believe?) what ever the figure its non negotiable. The fact you have never taken a sick day is irrelevant the point is on paye you will get paid a certain amount of sick pay, we will not. I should be able to charge enough to cover myself for x amount of days off sick (should i need them) and 3 weeks paid holiday and pension provisions as your or other employers factor in and charge to their clients. but people have the mentality that everything a tradesman charges goes in his pocket and wont pay those rates.. They will pay it to a paper pusher of any description because they are a better breed and far more important.
That's not true. I'm a craftsman at best. I craft words. My dad was a carpenter. He did the same with wood. Others have made journalism into a profession but it is really a craft. The holiday I get is 9% I believe. If you only work 4 hours per week - because your employer has cut your hours - it's a bit much to go sick very often!! You don't see many poor plumbers or plasterers in London. One plunder I had in to quote foolishly boasted about his three kids in private schools before I showed him the door. And what I object to is the lack of tax paid, for whatever reason, when I pay tax, PAYE, on my meagre bloody pensions and earnings.
We'll at the risk of sounding like a unionist, perhaps if you all stuck together you could dictate you rates.. we cant as even the staunchest nationalist will still get a ............ ............ to build his loft if he is cheaper.. You are in a position where i think english skills are a must!!!!
