So I have a 2013 mutley, and was more than happy with the screen protection and associated noise levels with my shoe multitec helmet. i was considering getting a new helmet with sun visor, so happened to be trying on lots at the bike show last week. Schubert was too tight inside, especially on forehead. Shoei Neotec fitted well, and at the show were £330 with pinlock included, how could I say no! Now here's the thing. All of a sudden with this helmet anything over 30 mph and I notice the helmet buffeting. I did not expect this, being an aerodynamic improvement on the older Multitec. I thought it would be better than the Multitec. If I stand up when riding then the helmet is quiet, but I don't think I will get away with riding like that ,like sorry officer it's less buffeting up here!.Has anyone else got a Neotec and similar turbulence.?
Pikes Peak Carbon worked for me, although just changed to an AGV Pista. No buffeting, just a lot of wind noise
The position of the screen makes a significant difference. I have ridden for a number of years with an X-Spirit and I have to choose between the vents getting air flow and protection. I have found that one particular screen position amplifies buffeting caused by following vans and lorries and overtaking. To be fair unless you want a BMW or Goldwing experience I'n not convinced there is anything much better without going into a load of faff. Andy
But the new helmets buffeting is significantly worse than the one it replaces, despite better aerodynamics, illogical to me?also the buffeting starts at 30 mph in town even. Doesn't matter if there is something in front of me or not. And changing the screen position makes very little differences.
Helmet, screen, height of rider all make a difference. Change any one and you get different results. Tried different helmets and all have a different noise. No noise with vent shut on my Shark. Steams up easily so open vent and noisy again. I had buffeting with standard screen and Shoei xr or Arai. Fitted Varioscreen= no buffeting with any helmet. Bit of a raffle tbh.
Hi Michel, I have had a Shoei neotech & a 2010 Multi s for 2 years. I also had buffeting which was annoying and in an effort to fix have the higher touring screen with Aztec spacers and some home made wind deflectors made out of 3mm perspex. These mods work for me! I bought a Shoei GT air at the NEC last dec and that seems the same as the neotech, although i have not tried it with the standard screen. In the summer I use a cut down standard screen with the wind deflectors & that is good too. Hopefully, I can load a couple of (fairly crap) pictures. The top of the deflectors attach using stick on "hero blobs". By the way I am 180 cm. Cheers
Many thanks for the informative reply, I am about 5 cms shorter than you,and that makes it worse! I have seen deflectors on the top of the screens, but not on the sides, very much appreciate the photos too, nice garage,I could live in that!
I've got the standard, gt and the pikes peak carbon. I use the PP screen for everyday use and for longer journeys the gt screen. Can't use the standard with my schuberth c3 as there is too much buffeting.
I also bought a Neotech at the bike show, excellent prices, and I also previously rode with a normal Shoei. I use a low Pikes peak for normal riding and the touring screen with a Wunderlich adjustable deflector for long trips (with a lot of motorway miles). Both these set ups seem to give a reasonable level of comfort without too much buffeting The CalSci screen eliminates all buffeting, but it's large and close to you. I have one I'm happy to sell if anyone wants it.
A Wunderlich BMW deflector fitted on the top of the screen works on the 2010 and 2013 models. Great if you do big mileages and like to stay quiet and in smooth air, the looks aren't to everybody's taste.
The Wunderlich one is quick and easy to remove, it also has wide range of adjustments, and it's better looking than the Touratech version.
They come up occasionally on secondhand on ebay, or new Wunderlich Vario ERGO Screen Extension Wind Deflector (Option: Clear or Tinted) | eBay Wunderlich VarioERGO screen deflector
many thanks, the first option only have tinted left for now,i imagine clear will come back into stock at some point. the second don't have the uk in the list of countries they will send to, I have emailed then for clarification as we are one of the only countries not on their drop down menu. many thanks though, the search continues.
I agree with others it is the screen, I generally run a pike peaks style, but I bought a large givi that is very good, the original screen is useless for me
I got mine from Nippy Normans Wunderlich universal screen extension - clear (WUN-20280-001) - Nippy Normans
