I was out on the bike Friday night in central London, it was fairly busy.. I had the engine temp go as high as 111 degree C a temp never seen before !! Got the bike home and worried about it most of the weekend so today I checked the coolant level but the sight glass is not that visible really and ended up stripping the side panel off to check that way. I topped up by about half a litre which was worrying too.. Started the bike and let her warm normally till the fans come on at 104 degrees C, they went off at 100 as expected, this happened a couple of times and then very slowly temp crept up to 106...now I know that's not normal especially as it was just sat there idling in the garden.. I've checked for signs of leaks around the rads and hoses but can't see anything. Any ideas ??
The loss off fluid is because at some point you have turned the ignition off when rad was to hot so it has boiled over a bit. I have seen same temperature on my 1199 its nothing to worry about IMHO If you are concerned when it reaches that sort of temp, pull over, use the kill switch to turn engine off so ignition remains on and fans continue to spin, this will cool the rad down then you can continue on your way. I believe the manual says if temp goes over 125c pull over so at 111 you are still within acceptable heat tolerances.
Phew that's a bit of weight lifted, I did check all hoses and even inside the oil filler cap just to be sure I'd not blown a head gasket but that was all fine. You could be spot on with the boiling over, I often run hot in town and when I stop I just switch off.
I did that once, think temp was around 115, got off bike to hear a hissing sound then next thing a puddle on the floor whoopsy, now when I stop I always use the kill switch, if fans are running I leave ignition on till fans stop. Never takes long for the fans to do their job.
The last thing anyone wants with an 1199 is engine work[emoji17] I've been more paranoid with this than any other bike but with 12k trouble free miles I'm impressed with reliability.
Your not wrong there, I was tempted to drop a tooth on the front to help with cornering but I know the front will be up more often than not and the DTC light on constantly [emoji1]
Its not that bad actually, I have a 43 teeth rear sprocket (std is 39), makes 2nd gear round town riding so manageable she is a breeze in traffic now.
I try not to hit roundabouts but go around them instead Depends on type of roundabout really and which exit you are taking. I managed to get round most roundabouts in 2nd gear then on the gas as exiting, can get a nice snake going on exit, I have my TC set to 3 I find it allows me to keep the throttle open without having any drama.
I'm finding second a bit high and getting the feel of the engine thump unnerving however first is too low and twitchy. I did the front sprocket on my 848 and it made a huge difference at low revs, so it's safe to say any mod on the 1199 has to be an improvement
Take your pick at which way you go but they will have the same result, mine is smooth as going around roundabouts in 2nd, to be honest once going I very rarely ever drop down to 1st unless I come to a stop. One thing to bear in mind, if you go bigger on rear sprocket likely hood is you will need to get a new chain, reason being you cant push the rear wheel forward enough without it butting up against the swing arm. I fitted a D.I.D chain on mine bought the 120 link one just to make sure, can't remember off the top of my head how many links we removed now but think it was around a dozen. You can still get a fair whack acceleration without lifting, its all about learning how much you can twist the throttle before it gets to a point where it will want to spit you off the back.
That looks sweet, I'm liking the anodised nuts [emoji1] I'm quite smooth on the throttle and generally unless I'm giving it full beans in race mode only using 50-75% throttle, even with super corsa's and DTC on 3 I can still feel the back end trying to overtake. I'm due a new chain soon so maybe that's the way to go.
The whole kit is a quick release system CNC items bought from @Conquest Carbon being a forum member entitles you to 10% discount. Its about £450 you get sprocket, plus the carrier, sprocket and flange nuts, flange and the wheel nuts. You can mix and match the colours they do red, gold, titanium and possibly a 4th colour I cant remember. You get a choice of std 39 teeth or 43 teeth sprocket. Not sure if you can see the detail on the next picture but I have also replace the fairing bolts for anodised red too.
I do like the stealth black and the red fairing kit sets it off nicely. Ive looked at the kits on conquest carbon drooling as I scroll through [emoji13] not sure I can afford the remortgage I'd need tho. What's your mpg like? I'm getting an average of 95 to a full tank.
Errrr my MPG comes in slightly less than that, mind you I have a Termi full system. Mines about 85 miles from ful to reserve light. Fingers crossed I am having a custom map on the ECU mid May which will improve fuel economy, I did my 848 Evo a few weeks back. that was 95 miles from full to yellow light, now it is doing 120 miles from full to reserve light Here is the list of the mods done. TBH your better off going upto 43 on the rear than you are going down to 14 on the front. The front is already working hard with a std 15. This is the mode I would do if I were to change.
