It Really Is About The Money...

  1. So, have these 'smart' motorways improved the flow of traffic or reduced congestion..?

Not a fucking chance. It's a revenue raiser, we all know it is, so why don't they just come out and say it.

  2. Inappropriate speed limits are everywhere. Take our good old M ways for example; we're still limited to a pathetically low 70mph. Even most of Europe has 81mph (indicated 86/87mph) which is about right in the dry.

Full marks to my Tomtom for correctly pinging all the active Gatsos and new cameras.

  3. Im not moving it...just changing the angle....most bike plates angle upwards, cars are usually vertical......

  4. Vehicle construction and use rules... Which can incur a big fine...

    60. Fixing of registration plate
    (1) (a) Where a vehicle has been so designed that a space has been provided for the fixing
of a registration plate, the plate shall be fixed in the space so provided.
( Where a space is not provided the plate shall be fixed in the manner specified in
    paragraph (2).
    (2) Subject to paragraph (3), a registration plate shall be fixed vertically or, where that is not
reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the vertical as is reasonably practical at the front and
rear of every motor vehicle in such manner that the characters of the registration mark shall, at all
times, be visible from the front or the rear of the motor vehicle.

    (3) No registration plate shall be fixed in the front of a trailer.
    (4) Where a trailer or a semi-trailer is drawn by another vehicle, the registration plate of the
drawing vehicle shall be fixed on the back right-hand side and that of the trailer or semi-trailer on the
back left-hand side of the trailer or semi-trailer.
    (5) A registration plate shall be fixed at a height of not more than 1.5 metres from ground level.

And, of course, deliberately avoiding detection is, technically, fraud...

  5. But hey - if you want to take the chance, that's your choice...

  6. yep....ok, JR45 QC, but ive currently got a clean licence.... :)

Plus, you're the one that started the thread - I was only offering an alternative, it may not be this side of the law but its an effective one, if they (the man) choose to fleece you (JR45) which is what you've got the beef about then right now, this minute, theres nothing you can do about it, nor me either, or, I can take steps to protect myself, to a certain extent.

It sound like im taking an argumentative stance but im not ( its just how the written/typed word comes over ) - its just an easy to do option. In fact theres a lad I see on the way home (goes the opposite way to me every day on an old slab sided GSXR1100 and his rear plate is like a postage stamp - id say, about 7" x 2 1/2" and its been on there for years, which does to a certain extent prove my point.

  7. OK... I agree... some people seem to get away with it, sometimes for years... One guy came down to Cornwall Bike Night with us the other day (also on a GSXR) with a small, single line number plate. There were plod everywhere at the bike night - including an armed response unit, for some unknown reason; maybe they think the British Legion Riders Branch are terrorists or something - and nobody seemed to be getting ticketed for small plates or loud exhausts etc. It does depend entirely on how the police are feeling at the time - maybe they thought it would be a bit of bad publicity to ticket people at an event that raises money for charity, who knows...
What I do know is I have had a fine for a legal size plate; legal spacing, legal size lettering, just with italic lettering - mostly because the woman MPC in the traffic car was bored, I suspect. Yes, the plate had been on the bike for three and a half years, so I should probably be happy that I got away with it for that long...
I have also seen bikes (and cars) competing on trials get tickets because their plates were muddy, and therefore "unreadable" ( I sh*t you not )...
Maybe the plod up your way are a bit more tolerant than down here in Devon & Cornwall...
Honestly, I'm not being argumentative either; just pointing out that you could get done for it, sooner or later. Like I said - "yer pays yer money, yer takes yer chance"...
    :)

  8. Yep. Very true but, essentially I'd rather take my chance with a fine than take my chance with a fine and points! Thats what I was getting at...

  10. Number plates seem to be picked on in places most where they do not like bikers, IE Wales, and SW. here in the SE rare they have time to bother with Bike Plates.

  11. As for Speed cameras, I think very few are at places that are Accident Hot Spots, and Speed Restrictions seem to be getting worse for no reason, Well Cyclist reasons.
I find it odd they are trying to connect Speed to being anti social, in my view having to follow some person in front at way below the speed limit is far more anti social, than just speeding safely on your own.
I bet one of the stats if they dare post or get info on:- Most accidents involve another vehicle, and very few accidents involve no other vehicles, are speed related, though I would guess what small percentage of those accidents there were, those are due to road conditions, and poor driving ability.

  12. Talking about Lycra cyclists I had one the other morning who I couldn't overtake as he was doing thirty down hill so I drove along side him :)
I had to slow down for the traffic while he continued at speed down the left hand side of us all
Where is a police man when you need one
This cyclist would have no way of stopping if a car had turned left in front of him

  13. Ass holes.. All of them!

  14. its a tough one....im against speed cameras in 95% of the places they are, (in total agreement with the op) but, put a speed camera outside a school that goes live 2 hours before and 2 hours after school hours and you get caught...then you deserve it! But thats a common sense way of using them isnt it! So i suppose that kind of placement/usage will never happen.
