To me that just proved what a complete dick he really is - if you watch that back, the egg hits him, he has a look around to make sure his security is close at hand, then swings for a bloke about one third of his size... He's a bully, and always will be...
We are talking about a working class guy who got no education as a youngster, worked as a servant, took up studying as a mature student, climbed the slippery pole without connections or money (or beauty or articulacy), and made it to Deputy Prime Minister for 10 years. Not many people can equal that achievement. Yet all posters can do is make mean, nasty, snide, envious comments about him. This tells me more about the posters than about John Prescott.
There are a fair few in the Labour party from privileged backgrounds and a fair few in the Conservative party who are not. BUT, I do agree with the general thrust of your post.
Pete - if you have to be like John Prescott to be deputy prime-minister, or to achieve anything in politics, then I'm quite happy to stay where I am. Yes, yes, poor lad from working class background etc, etc... That doesn't alter the fact that he is a thoroughly unpleasant person...
Steve - I agree with much of your sentiment (if not your political leanings). But - how many of the current labour shadow cabinet (or the previous labour government) have actually ever had a real job? Very few... Be that as it may - this thread was not intended to be about politics per se - it was merely a comment on what a thoroughly unpleasant, arrogant, bully John Prescott is - and how he got put back in his box by a magazine editor and a TV presenter... The extended version is on tonight, so another chance to see the fat oaf being made to look stupid...
That doesn't alter the fact that he is a thoroughly unpleasant person...[/QUOTE] so are a fair whack of the population so you canny say they aint represented.
No, you don't have to be like John Prescott to be Deputy PM. You could be like Nick Clegg. Unless you'd prefer to be like George Osborne.
I don't really care how hard he worked to get there, I could not agree more that Prescott is a most obnoxious, loathsome fellow, I grew up listening to how great Labour was and how crap everybody else was going to make the country, my dad was a shop steward, how glad am I that I never believed a word of it Regardless of political leaning history tells us that every time Labour has come to power they have managed to bring the country to its knees, it people like Prescott that have achieved that for us! and still we give them air time
Actually, I thought he came across a bit better on the extended (unedited?) version. Still a bit pugnacious but he tried to get into the spirit of things.
Anyone can agree or disagree with John Prescott's political views, as they choose. I have said nothing about that. Certainly he is not an articulate or witty man, but I wouldn't hold that against him. Whether he is personally unpleasant I have no idea, never having met him; I bow to the opinion of those who know him well, as posters in this thread presumably must do ...
You don't need to know John Prescott to make a judgement about the way he conducts himself. The way he rose to Ian Hislop speaks volumes. Unfortunately people who get into positions of power can be thoroughly unpleasant and often treat people around them badly. Try reading up about how Gordon Brown behaved for a good example.
Ultimately your right an no is the correct answer, I don't really care about anything with a political slant, to me politics in general are a waste of all of our time. The up coming election being a perfect example, we will all discuss ad nausea and make a judgement on who's manifesto is the best for us knowing full well that as soon as there is a winner that party will throw said manifesto out the window and do what they like By far the worst of them all is Labour they are just plain dangerous as proved by Blair & Brown
John Prescott - "man of the people". The person who took a chauffeur-driven Jaguar to make a two minute journey from (very posh) hotel to conference room; allegedly so that his wife's (very expensive) haircut didn't get messed up. The same person who (for the sake of a good photo opportunity and to prove what a great working class bloke he really is) arrived in Scarborough by train, surrounded by press reporters. Unfortunately he was naive enough to believe that said reporters wouldn't spot the fact that he got on the train about five miles outside Scarborough having been driven from London in his favourite chauffeur-driven Jaguar, and then got into the same Jaguar at Scarborough station to be driven to the hotel - again, a journey of about five minutes.
What I find most annoying about Prescott, though, is that whenever he appears on any TV programme - be it quiz show, chat show or whatever - he can't help but bang on about what a great job the last Labour government did... Waving his "pledge cards" about like Chairman Mao's little red book. Yes John, that government brought economic ruin to the country, got us involved in two unnecessary and probably illegal wars, and then got voted out of power - great job !
