  1. Hi guys
I'm currently looking at one of these
What can you owners/ past owners tell me about them please

    Recommendations
Things I should be looking out for
    Etc etc

I am in touch with a guy selling a 2004 model that looks very tidy and pretty good money

Thanks in advance for any info :upyeah:

  2. If it checks out buy it, is it a Mono?

  3. It is yes
Higher miles than I was hoping for, but in reality still only just over 1k a year, so not exactly high

  4. If the price is right then it's a no brainer as it won't go down in value as I'm sure your aware :) They are fab bikes, you won't regret it. Will it be your first Ducati? My first was an '02 998 that I still have.

  5. It's my second
Only bought my first a month ago and I'm hooked ha ha
Was seriously looking at the new 1299, but think my money is better in something like the 998S as I love my 748R, so something with just a bit more oooomph would be just right

  6. Did the 998 FE have the same motor as the first 999 (more or less)?

  7. Pretty much, deep sump 998cc testastratta

  8. Wasn't it only the revamped 999 (the 2005 one) that had the deep sump motor, apart from the R of the early 999? Didn't know the 998 was a deep sump.

  9. Not too sure but I have read the 998S had deep sump. My R's have deep sump and are both 2003, but equally my 2003 999S (now sold) also had a deep sump as all 999S's did.

  10. The 998s + r had the extended fairing lowers ( oil pan) to cover the deep sump of the motor

  11. The 998 had shallow sump and less bhp than the 998S which had deep sump and more bhp. I can't remember if the S and the R were the same but I seem to remember there being some difference in how they were cast. The engine from the S went on to be used in all the 999 variants but I think the 999R may have a different motor and may have even been 999cc.

999R was 999cc with shorter stroke and larger bore :) sandcast cases as on the 998R and 996R. Standard 999 had shallow sump from 2002 on, all 999S had deep sump.

  13. My '04 FE Mono is a deep sump non sand cast, although some d sump 998s' were sand cast.

  14. as this is the last of this design most of the nasty design issues that befell the 748/9*6 were ironed out.
my 2002 998s has been fantastic and i have not been shy with her

afaik 998s should have deep sump motor, ohlins rear shock & steering damper
    carbon belly pan

the 2004 FE might have had ohlins forks too but not sure I'm sure @final_edition can help here

check usual stuff full service history, obvious signs of heavy use or crash repairs (brake disc wear, scuffed extremities, bent lockstop , bent radiator etc)

sprag clutch can be an issue especially on older garage queen ducs (not just the 998)
the big engines are hard to turn over from cold and the starting system is just about up to the job as long as has a decent battery that is fully charged before starting it (i'd take a good batt and jump leads with you when you go it see it)
frequent starts from cold with a shit battery will wear the spray clutch
if its hard to start and makes loud clunks when fails, this is a sign the sprag is worn and will eventually let go which can be upwards of £400 quid to repair

get the VIN and engine numbers and ping an email to ducati to see if they definitely started life as the bike you are buying . most 998 were sold biposto then converted to mono

other wise buy it, look at it,ride it & smile lots and lots

Decent electric cables would be a good idea, now I wonder :Bag:

  16. As far as I know:
    -998 shallow sump 123hp

-998s deep sump, sand cast, carbon belly, ohlins rear shock 136hp

-998s Baylis/bostrom same a S -version, but equipped with ohlins all around.

-998S FE, same as S version, except full ohlins and not all sand cast, they used the left over parts for this one.

998R sand cast, a lot of carbon, full ohlins 999cc 139hp

    Cheers
