Enlarged Air Box 1098r

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Mary Hinge, May 15, 2015.

  1. I'm thinking of fitting an enlarged CF air box and tubes. Is there much of a performance gain to be made and also will I require a remap?

  2. no and yes and whats the point.........

  3. Dunno, that's why I'm asking. Just done almeria and an air tube rattled off its fixings so thought I might fettle it good and proper. But if it's pointless I'll fix it as cheaply as possible.

  4. more air means more fuel which means more power but you got to get it in and at the right time which means to really benefit other stuff will need doing to compliment it i.e. head work, cam timing, exhaust.....and so on...

  5. Thanks, I get that. I've pretty much had all that done plus enlarged throttle bodies. So, will it benefit from slapping in a bigger air box???

  6. a 1098r ? and you need more power ? why the hell not ,go for it but keep the standard to return to if it goes tits up.

  7. Why don't you ask Wilf?

  8. Wish my duc had more than its mere 170hp on rapido's dyno :-(

  9. Yeah, I've had words and it will indeed liven things up a wee bit with another remap. But with a MR dyno reading of 181 do I need it? Its a frickin missile already and way beyond my cack handed skills. Just done Almeria and there wasn't a quicker bike there. Definitely quicker riders but I could blast anything in a blastathon! It was fucking great fun!!

Soooooo, a bigger airbox it is then......

  10. Ah, but you're a quicker rider.... I think you do 1.44's at Almeria?? I'm happy to crack 1.50!

  11. Have MR bought a dyno now then........

  12. Dunn
Dunno, why? Give em a ring.

  13. So you've answered your own question. Don't forget, if you're going for more power, more air = more fuel! Whether you will ever use the extra fractional horses (at max throttle openings only) is debatable. But you will almost certainly see a further reduction of the already short range as it gulps more air+fuel at partial throttle openings.

  14. Fair comment. I don't give a monkeys about fuel consumption, its a track whore. Perhaps I speak for a lot of lads on here, I know performance gains will be small but I love stripping my bike down and sticking sexy bits and bobs here and there. Then popping it all back together cleaning/polishing it as I go. Then cracking open a can and just looking at it! You know the score.

  15. Yeah, I'm with you on the polishing/cleaning bit... But you'll just be giving this to Wilf to sort out, plus paying for another 4-8hrs on the dyno for the privilege of something you'll only see the downside of 99% of the time. On the other hand, maybe having an extra 3rwhp for that 1% could be worth it! :)

  16. During my recent trip to Almeria, one of the airtubes rattled off its fixings and destroyed itself in the process. No biggie, I just thought 'should I fix this like for like or upgrade' I mean, this gives me an ideal opportunity to spunk more cash (for minute gains) on my beloved 1098R... I'm still not decided.

  17. Just a little quicker !-)
    Managed a 1'43 !
Was really looking at breaking into 1'30's

I thinks Rapido just book time on someone else's dyno, they done a great job with my bike.

  18. 1'43 is very quick indeed for us mere mortals. Breaking into the high 1'30's is a quantum leap from 1'43. Good luck on that one. And be prepared for more gravel rash and bust RX7GP's!!
