Chuka Umunna - What Happened ?

  1. Yes it is, you have no right to expect people to fall into your comfort zone. Whatever a person's views are, they are their buisness whether you like it or not.

  2. I have no right, that's true. It's a person's business, what the think.

It is my right though, to prefer what I prefer, and I prefer people to be self-aware..

  3. So you're saying anyone who chooses to vote for a 'familiar' name is racist @Loz ?

  4. 95% or more of people, not just in UK but I'd suggest worldwide, have no idea what self awareness is nor would accept they are not.

So yes. Asking way too much. In fact you are asking less of ISIS to prey to the pope than for humans to have any understanding as to why they have the beliefs they do

  5. No.

I am saying that I want anyone doing so to examine their own conscience.
I will abide by their findings (not that I have any choice in the matter).

  6. "Disraeli" as a surname was thought to be a severe electoral disadvantage, in view of the way jews were regarded in Victorian times. But somehow that consideration did not prevent Benjamin Disraeli from becoming a highly successful and well-regarded Conservative Prime Minister. Twice.

  7. That's not what your previous comment suggested, starting comment 'people are free to be racist' presupposes in order to consider voting criteria to include their name, they are racist.

  8. Good point.

I believe that Disraeli and William Blake were contemporaries. Perhaps people at the time thought that, by voting Disraeli into power, they would hasten England's destiny to become "a New Jerusalem".

  9. You're thinking too much into it. The 'people' are not educated, nor care, in the main. The successful party is determined by two simple things: peer and family pressure to deliver 'loyalty' regardless of outcome and whoever gives the remaining 50% what is best for THEM and communicates it's most effectively.

    Hence the Blair years

  10. People are free to be racist. That racism could take many forms.

Some people may be put off voting for someone with "a funny name" for many reasons - racism, xenophobia or maybe they think it's a made-up name that's meant to be funny. Who knows? The point is, some people will avoid "foreign sounding names" due to racism - which is their right.

I'll say it again though, and this was prompted by the now-disappeared OP - people ought, in my opinion, to examine their motivations, whatever they may be, for certain actions and be aware of why they do things. I'll ask again - is this too much to ask?

  11. You can keep asking. The result will always be the same. Yes.

And you are still saying to use someone's name as s criteria for voting makes them racist. In typical style you just won't admit it :upyeah:

  12. I reckon Preti Patel for next story leader.

  13. Well OK then! :D

Are you actually reading what I'm typing?
How do I know whether someone is being racist in this circumstance? All I'm asking is that "someone" understands why do they a particular something. Is that too mu - uh, sorry. I'm asking too much, aren't I :)

  14. Yes. Still ;)

You give away your own judgement and biased opinion by staying, after a comment, 'people can be racist'

You need to up the self awareness Loz ;) but you're not alone. Some of the real brains and highly educated on here are in the same boat. Enjoy the freedom to be ignorant like the rest of us :upyeah:

  17. She is tasty.

    Cue accusations of sexism ;)

  18. can you vote for someone just because of their gender or is that sexist too?

  19. Just because a law says you cannot be racist, doesnt stop people being racist.
