New Set Of Keys!

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Iant187, May 20, 2015.

  1. OK so I don't have ANY keys for my 916!!! (it was my brothers bike and I'm looking to restore it).

As I understand it, the 916 isn't coded to the ECU or immobilisor!!! (which is a bonus, assuming that's true?)

So, I've heard I can take the ignition barrel off and get a key cutter to make a new key from that!
Do you guys know anywhere that can do that for me or have you had the same done for yourselves?
I'm based in Gloucestershire so would be ideal if I could just take it somewhere local (or even better if they can come out to the bike!).

    Thanks in anticipation...

  2. Thanks Weeksy, I was (naively) hoping it would cost less than £100 to get a key cut from the barrel! I would prefer to keep the locks if poss (just because it was my brothers bike and I'd like to replace as little as possible - just from a sentimental perspective - although if the locksmith wants a lot of money, then scr3w that, I'll buy a set of locks). If you have details of the locksmith you referred to that would be cool.
    Cheers

  3. Shouldn't there be a key code, surely you can just order a key from that providing you have the log book etc.

  4. Apparently not! (After speaking to Ducati in Bristol), they said there are some locksmiths that can cutkeys from the barrel or otherwise I'd have to buy a new set of locks.

  5. Keys galore
    Camden

  6. try emailing the factory, cannot believe that there is no code to have a key cut. Sometimes the code is actually on the barrel.

  7. Cool, I'll get the barrel out and see if there's a number on it.
However... I just spoke to a locksmith in Bristol and he reckoned it wouldn't be difficult to cut one if I took the barrel in - he reckons about £25
Either way I'll get the ignition barrel off and I'll let you know...
    Thanks

  8. Don't forget the fuel cap!
I once went on a track day by car and realised I had left the bike key at home once I was nearly 200 miles away. A friend bodged the ignition by tying a couple of wires together (can't remember which ones) but the tank had to be attacked with a screwdriver...

  9. OK so tried removing the ignition barrel and can't get it from behind the bit on the Yoke, the bit the steering damper attaches to is just in the way by about 5mm! Do I need to remove the fuel tank to get the barrel out? Here's a pic of where I got to..

  10. Are the steering stops adjustable? If they are try screwing them in further to allow the steering to turn further.

  11. Ian if you are stripping the bike down anyway, why not remove the top yoke for better access?

  12. Tank is easy to shift. 1 bolt under the seat should give you enough room to manoeuvre with discounting anything.

  13. nope seems the steering stops at the frame.. I've just taken the fairings off, going to look a bit closer... I'll let you know..

  14. I'm trying to just do little bits at a time :) just because I know it might be hard to put all back and I'll forget what went where... I'll see if I can move the tank, otherwise yep the yoke is coming off!

  15. Take plenty of pictures while disassembling - bag and label, but you know that, I don't take my own advice and end up regretting it at times :)

  16. Yeah I'm already there mate ha ha... taken lots of things apart and already forgotten which way something went! I'll start taking pics :) In fact I already need to label the bit I just disconnected from the wiring loom cause that will mean nothing in 3 weeks time!

  17. Thanks Cream, you were right.
Unfortunately, I need to take the ignition barrel out (to take to a locksmith) because I don't have any keys and you need a key to remove the seat pod!!! FFS, however for reference to anyone else searching and in a similar problem, if you have a feel under the seat pod (by the lock), you can find the cable and pull it to release the seat, then you can get to the allen nut that holds the tank and ta da... except moving the tank allows the ignition barrel to come free, but when you disconnect it from the wiring loom, there is a conector block at the end of it that won't pas through the frame between the fluid reservoir and the shroud that the fuel tank sits in. I'll post a pic, but looks like I'll need to drain the fuel and remove the tank altogether...

  18. For reference: I ended up removing the fuel tank (didn't label a thing! so I'm sure I'll c0ck that up when I put it back!) then removed the 6 allen nuts that hold the plastic shroud that the air filter and fuel tank sit in. I couldn't see how to get this shroud past the air intakes! but removing the nuts and fee'ing it was enough to get the ignition barrel and wires past the reservoir and out.
just got to get this to the locksmith now to see what he says!
