Good question. I don't suppose the colour of his skin has done him any harm, he is smart, articulate and, as ducbird has pointed out, photogenic, but it is the bleeding heart on sleeve bollox he spouts that I find irritating. But that doesn't make him any different from Tristram Hunt or Andy Burnham in my book.
