  2. Don't know about the Hyper but my 17yr old, near on 50k miles 916 has no play in the rear wheel.

Check that the wheel is fitted correctly, again maybe not the same on a Hyper but on some 916 models there were 4 extra (lightening) holes in the wheel that don't quite line up with the drive pins but it is possible to fit it wrong, torque it and it look OK but loosens after a few miles as it chews into the wheel...

  6. There are guys out there who will dis-assemble the hub, clean it check it and re-grease it and I'm talking mechanics who know Ducati's drop Topolino a PM he had a guy he used.

Ok the book says don't dis-assemble on pain of death, but the manual also states to take the bike to a dealer to adjust the chain, Do you?

  7. have you been adjusting your chain yourself or who did adjust it last......perhaps too tight thats what fails the rear hub bearings.....

  8. Doesn't do the gearbox much good either. A bike chain is one of the very few things in life that is better a bit slack than a bit tight.

  9. Absolutely right. Too tight a chain can damage the gearbox bearings, sprockets, wheel bearings, and the chain itself, for starters. Too slack a chain is unlikely to do much damage unless it is grossly slack. Casual comments at bike gatherings are much more likely to sneer at slack chains than tight ones, oddly enough.

  11. MV are renowned for hub bearing failures. In the MV the bearings are not really up to the job. The bearing nearest the wheel is the one that fails.
Premature failure is caused by firstly over tightening the bolts that clamp the hub and secondly running the chain too tight
I have just replaced my MV hub bearings the 750's like mine suffered slightly less than the litre models.

Replacing the bearings will not be any different to the MV and it's easy once stripped down that is if you can do these things yourself

  12. There should definitely be no movement in the wheel. When you say you can see movement on the hub, is that between the wheel and hub flange? If so, then it's not bearings as the the wheel nut simply clamps the wheel to the hub face and has no effect on the bearings etc. check the mating faces and the recesses the four spigots fit into.
If the hub is moving with the wheel, then that's bearing or shaft movement. Check the nut on the sprocket carrier. It's often overlooked, often comes loose and also hold the wheel shaft into the hub......

  15. How tight are the hub clamp screws on the arm?

  17. I'd still check the carrier nut. I've seen them barely hand tight yet the clip has still been in place and tied up.
If it is done up, then you're into getting the in pulled apart I'm afraid

  18. After all other possibilities have been excluded, it comes down to a duff wheel bearing. It happens.

  20. Glad it's sorted. The issue will be it hasn't been checked. They do come loose and the fact it has a safety clip there won't stop it, just that it won't fall off.
It's been a common "character trait" since the 916.
