OK so I figured out I have a (1998) 916 Bip I've now got an ECU (16M), but I don't have a chip in it!! The bike has got Termi exhausts... Stupid question I'm sure, but would this use the standard Bip chip or would I use a different chip (because of the exhausts)? Any ideas where I can get a chip from - I see a seller from Slovakia on e-bay selling them - not sure if they can be trusted, has anyone here tried???
Thanks Toby, I'll give them a call. NB Has anyone tried the chips off e-bay? and do you change the chip if you've put Termi exhausts on??
Yeah got one on my 748 changed from stock to 45mm Termis works fine, if you know what you need go for it, if you're unsure I'd get one from JHP they'll make sure you get the right one and don't recall them being silly prices
OK I spoke to JHP Racing... They want about £60 for programming a chip plus postage! (bit more than I was hoping, but there you go..). The guy wanted to know exact dimensions of all the pipes to the exhaust system, from the engine to the riser to the exhaust to the cans.. could be 45, 50, 52, and all sorts of different other things... Seems quite accurate and I'm not sure I can measure to within 2mm with the school ruler I've got! What I'm wondering is maybe just getting a "stock" chip (which I can get for about £20) just to get the bike started and make sure everything else is OK and then take the bike to a tuning shop or maybe JHP and get it tuned properly. So my question now is... will it run OK'ish on a stock chip with the Termi exhausts (for the sake of £20)? or should I just get something I can properly measure these pipes with and get a chip mapped for the bike? Does it make much difference? What would you do?
Or push the boat out and get a set of digital ones, there's loads about for a tenner that are accurate enough for this sort of thing it won't be the only time they'll come in handy
£1.01!!!! does it look like I'm made of money Good point Toby, I might go crazy and get some digital ones. What the hell... anything with a digital display has got to be worth having!!!
It will run okay with a stock chip.It wont be 100%,but close enough.Certainly for getting it up and running.See about all the laa de daa bits later.
Yeah that's exactly what I'm thinking... I offered the bloke in Slovakia £15 for the stock chip which he accepted so I'll chuck that in and as you say I can laa de daa it up after I got the bike running.. Cheers..
NB for ref these are the pipes: Seem to measure 50mm at the cans, 50mm on the uprights, but might be 45mm where the two smaller pipes leave the engine block and join the first pipe! But this was using my school ruler and a pair of pruning sheers as callipers (so there could be an error + / - 10mm ha ha....) I'm going to go with the stock chip anyhow for now, then take it to a tuners after it's running...
