Off on a tour to Andorra next week and the (recently replaced) fuel gauge has suddenly stopped working properly. It went to almost empty on the way home tonight and despite stopping and filling up it's still showing empty. Any suggestions?
They are very fragile, maybe try to get it changed before we go, I don't think there are any temporary fixes just replacement Chris.
Reset the trip on fill up. Certainly don't let it ruin your trip. We did a Europe & mugello GP tour on bikes with far smaller tanks and no fuel gauges. The 999 one guy was on came bloody close to running out at one point but crawling along on the motorway at about 40mph we made it.
Peter - I don't think I will be able to get it done before we go away, P&H are running bookings about 2 weeks ahead. I'll try them on Monday, but doubtful. I used to manage for years by resetting the trip meter, just don't want the bike to decide to shut down if it thinks it has no fuel!
I have fitted them myself if they have one in stock, its not to difficult but a lot of bodywork has to be removed, takes about an hour and a half.
Mine was up and down like a new brides nightie, on a recent Spain trip after refuelling. Must say, the bikes electronics don't seem to like very high (35 deg) temperatures?
Mine went wrong after I accelerated hard away from some lights, I guess the fuel sloshing back in the tank dislodged something. Might try and change it tomorrow as I have a day off before we go away (If I can get hold of a spare one). Or I'll just leave it...
I have had a strange conversation with Snell's this morning about the fuel gauge sender on my 2011 MTS. The original one was misbehaving so I fitted a new sender myself, supplied free of charge by Ducati. Asked Snell's to install it electronically so it would work. They have now told me that the piece of software which makes the fuel sender work has had an unfortunate side-effect: it makes the horn sound continuously. So they are getting Ducati UK to supply a software patch to cure that problem. Sounds bizarre but I am just repeating what Snell's have told me.
Hmm, spoke with P&H today, they said they have three senders on back order. They said if they take the bike in tomorrow they will have a quick look and see it they can 'electronically' reset it. Let's hope that doesn't make the horn start, it will be a noisy trip if it does!
The latest version of fuel sensor when fitted to earlier 2010-2012 bikes require a software update, skyhook bikes should already have the updated software installed. I have had 2 fuel sensors but mine is the later bike so update not required. I believe the part no for the fuel sensor is on its 4th revision so they still haven't got it right!
Weird , I had one tank full on holiday that worked out to under 40 mpg . Not the nuttiest of riding either, was doing 2 tanks a day,and that was an isolated one. Otherwise mpg of fast and very fast was about 45 mpg. Now back to normal 48 mpg. However the fuel light comes on after about 14 or 15 litres used, quite annoying. I did infant ignore the fuel light one day,and promptly ran out of fuel after 40 miles with the light on. So the bike stops when it has run out of fuel, not when the sensor thinks there is no fuel or low fuel.
The 2015 DVT fuel gauge has worked very accurately up to now (2,500 miles). Gauge showing quarter full, filled up to the brim in a petrol station near home today. Turned on ignition. Oh no! Gauge still shows quarter full. Rode home, ignition off and on again: gauge now shows half full. Seems the long-running fuel gauge issues may not be solved after all.
I've only had my 2012 1200 two weeks and the fuel gauge is driving me nuts. Contacted the dealer a couple of days after buying the bike and it is booked in for new fuel sensor FOC in a few weeks. I'm relying on miles done at the moment and if I fill up with three bars showing and the warning light on and around 100 miles on the trip, I get 14ltrs in the tank. How can such a fundamental piece of equipment be so crap.
Wow I get at least 150 miles from full to light coming on and get around 16 ltrs in when I fill up. I took a fuel can with me when I first got the bike because the fuel gauge didn't seem accurate, I got 187 miles and the lcd on the dash started flashing telling me I had 2 miles left, the engine didn't slow down or put me in get you home mode so I'm not sure where that rumour came from? Just set trip 2 every time you fill up and fill up every 150 miles or sooner.
