  1. Hi peeps, I've been offered this 2002 748r.. Any comments on the bike would be appreciated..Many thanks..........

  2. Are you sure that's a my2002..if so it doesn't have the correct (slab side fairings) or the correct seat unit with the graphite coloured panels.

I would say its 100% been damaged...also note the right side top panel is a different shade of yellow to the lower, indicating the panels are mishmashed.

    HPI it for definite.

Sure I've seen this for sale on ebay?

  3. It does depend on how much the person is asking for the bike but it gives the impression of being a 2002 model with full Ohlins and carbon airbox. A good one can go for a nice sum, they are a sought after bike and the 2002 model was the last and best R model they made. However I notice the front end only has two pad calipers when it should have 4 and also the brake discs are wrong for a 2002 model. Do you know what year it is? as it looks like it is possibly an upgraded earlier bike. You would need to check the bike over thoroughly to make sure it is also genuinely an R model. One way is to look at the heads they have no markings on them and are completely plain, any other model will have Desmoquattro cast into the heads. You can see this by carefully looking through the V piece at the front

It's worth serious thought if the bike is up to scratch and has a good service history and is a genuine R. There are a couple of non original items like the exhausts, the stickers on the fairing and the carbon heel guard. The wheels should be silver and not black.

The bike definitely has been altered from stock, but the front end is wrong for the 2002 model year and the fairings are from an earlier bike.

Attached is a photo of a 748R note the difference in the disks and calipers on this a 2002 model.

  4. Oh and another thing..it has a biposto subframe, somethings not right about it!...steer clear.

Forks are off an sps...not original R..as there running standard 10mm offset discs, callipers are wrong like above.

  5. 748 SPS came with showa forks i belive??

  6. WoWWW!!!! you guys are brill.....
Thanks for all your advise...I was wondering re the fairing being MK1
Heres some words from the ad:
Ducati 748R, 2002 (52) one of the last...yellow...6300 miles with FSH.... recent £400 fine tune by race engineers.....new MOT for 12 months......fell off side stand when 3 months old, minor damage, fully repaired, no issues since.... excellent condition 3.jpg 4.jpg 2.jpg

  7. Yes Tommy, its been on Ebay twice now and not sold due to high reserve.....

The seller wants £4400 inc some extras...Non R fairing and Steering Damper! and seller states, after me asking, that "yes the fairing panel was replaced at the time the bike fell off its side stand, and have been on ever since"

Also seller states yoke plaque is No 698.......

  9. Still seems suss that it's got the wrong discs, front Calipers and the bip subframe. I'd say it's probs worth £3.5k at a push

If anything it's had a big knock...cat c if it's been through insurance. Probably had front wheel, forks, discs, Calipers, subframe, all panels, clocks rad etc replaced.

Or it's stolen recovered and had all it's nice bits stripped previously!

  10. The 748SPS/SP did have Showa forks and 65mm calipers but it also had floating discs which no other 748 had which includes the R. This bike has keyhole discs which were mostly on 996 models.

It's definitely a bitsa and its worth must depend on what engine it has.

A full and genuine 748SPS would not generally fetch even £4400 unless it was top notch and I have one of the last 748SPS UK models made and I wouldn't ask £4400 for it and it has full provenance.

The question is does it really have an R engine and frame.

  11. sp has floating discs and mm calipers on showa forks. The advertised bike is a bitsa and should be priced as such. £3300

  17. What a great insight into these bikes and knowledge, enjoyed reading all the details ! My mate had a late plate 748r with an 853 kit and it was absolutely brilliant on a track, unfortunately he smashed it to pieces at Cadwell.........

As for the bike that's for sale I'd give it a miss unless it's an absolute bargain and been checked by someone in the know for alignment etc.

  18. The seller states 698 is on the plaque on the yoke

  19. Quantuman, that is a bike with bits from at least three different sources. A questionable history sold by someone who does not appear to have a clue what he is selling (I suspect he knows exactly what he is selling). What you can see includes
    1. A biposto subframe, why would you add this with single seat fitted?
    2. The discs are incorrect for a 748r but are correct for a biposto of MY2001/2002
    3. The top half of the fairings are from a MY97/98 748 or 916, the bottom halves are from another bike again, the 748r decals are correct for the MY but placed on the wrong part of the fairing
    4. The RH caliper looks to be contemporary with the fairings and is dirtier than the LH one
    5. The tank looks correct but the seat looks odd can't pin down why
    6. Side stand looks like an early one without the MY02 safety switch also looks odd
    7. The seller claims a £400 pound fine tune by race engineers, I wonder who? A fine tune is usually done after a full service and set up - you won't get much of all that for £400
    8. If the panels were replaced when it fell off the side stand how many people do you know who would replace a set of fairings from a £11k bike with incorrect bits that don't match each other let alone the bike. It will scratch one side of the fairing and cost maybe £150 tops to touch up to a high standard. The later style fairings often come up on ebay any way, the seller claims it was fully repaired FFS
    9. Frame and engine numbers for the Rs include ZDM748R in the numbers all the others have S

Bottom line is it is a bitsa, so may contain bits from write offs or stolen bikes and the seller looks pretty dodgy - stay way. As it stands without confirmed clear engine and frame numbers it is worth <£2500 for spares or repair.
