748 New 748 Owner

  1. hi guys.

Just bought a 2002 748. It's not my first Ducati, but the first of the 748/996 models that I've owned.

A few questions for you guys:

    1. Ticking when cruising at 4k, sounds like it's from the front of engine, kind of like a sewing machine in operation. Is it normal?

    2. Mid range feels flat. Bike has termi full system and a carbon Airbox apparently, but midrange is poor and then at higher revs it wakes up and feels strong.

    3. Bike has no choke lever, idles very low when cold and stalls, have to hold revs manually. Should there be a choke?

    4. What should I pay for a full service (not belts) with all filters and fluids?

    Cheers

  2. There's no choke but there should be a fast idle button under the throttle, it will only work if the cable is adjusted correctly and it automatically releases when the throttle is opened up.
If it doesn't tick over when warm it might need the tps setting.

  3. Hi Steve,

I can't see the button. I've just taken a look. Is it hidden?

  4. It is possible that it wasn't fitted to the newer bikes, mine has one and it's a 1998 model, it's a small button under the throttle to the inside.

    Steve

  5. well blow me down with a bellows - I've got a 1999, and I never knew about such a button. Mine runs on a low tickover until it warms up, but it's fine after that.

  6. It's a very small button

  7. It's underneath the throttle. Mine is 2001 and I have it. Although the garage I bought it from didn't know about it and told me "rev it a bit till it warms up". [emoji33]

  8. my 99 has it but i never use it, mine ticks over sweet... after the rebuild its not working anyway as i messed something up! cant really remember but dont it pull out to operate and pop back in when you rev it?

  9. No chizel, turn the throttle a little and the button pushes in then automatically releases when the throttle is opened up.
    Steve

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  10. :Bag: Its been a while bud!

  11. I've never used mine either.

  12. ive used mine.. just not in a while....:Grumpy:

  13. Cheers guys.

If anyone can help with my other questions that'd be great.

Love the bike just getting familiar with it.

  14. Ticking isn't normal but how you can here a tick with all the other noise? Could be a manifold gasket or possible poorly adjusted valves.
Mid range power on mine has been fine, smooth power right through the Rev range with no drop off.

  15. Sorry mate, im not sure about the noise thing i'd have to hear it but the lack of mid range dont sound right at all! as for the cost of service im a lil outa touch with that (been about 4 years since i had one done and all that was done during recent rebuild) but can recommend Ducati pro team for really good rates and first class service. they are in Strood in Kent and do a pic up drop off thang as well.

  16. Flat midrange may mean the EPROM needs sorting for the exhaust. Are you running 45mm or 50mm cans? I've heard 50mm are to big for a 748.

  17. Service cost is very varied. What millage you on? How much history?

Most fluids easy to do yourself.

  18. Where are you?

  19. I'm in Essex.

    Mileage is 11200.

It has a full system apparently and the seller said it was 're flashed' and not a replacement chip. I wonder if it's still running the standard chip?

My local Ducati place in hyside motorcycles so I'll give them a call. Usually I prefer a independent specialist though but Essex doesn't have much choice.

  20. Try Biketech in Rayleigh 01702 410677 or 07765 883209
Phil is the guy did a great job servicing my 848 about £250.00 less than Hyside wanted. I'm near Maldon btw
