http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=161786614808&globalID=EBAY-GB Any thoughts on whether this is genuine? My mate is interested in an Ohlins 748r and has asked them for the numbers.
Phil, looks to have all that you would expect for a MY01r (has Ohlins forks and uprated brakes). Only 21 MY01 yellow ones built to UK spec in the latter part of 2000/early 2001, I wonder if the optional racing kit is available? Should have a plaque
Thanks guys, looks okay to me and with the Ohlins models I would think its a LOT of hassle to try and fake it, but u never know, we will check the numbers. The number plaque is showin in one of the pics if u zoom in. My only concern is the weird placement of a Ducati decal on one side, perhaps hiding a scratch which can be sorted but if it's hiding a whole where some crash protection was fitted then more worrying.
Sticker is about where it would be drilled for crash protection as you mentioned, but no sticker on the other side so probably not. Always worth asking for the fairing to be removed for viewing to check for repairs.
Yep, if we get to go and see it we will have a look at this stuff. I've been doing a bit of reading and the 748r should have 'wide belts' and no desmo markings on the heads, but we will see. He wants to trade his bike so private sale isn't really an option
I have just checked the fairings on my 2001 748R and that shield decal is not original but it appears to be missing a small gel shield on the tank. Colour and position of 748 decal is right and it looks pretty original. There is very little support for an Ultimap eprom nowadays but the genuine article is still available. The cans fitted should be 50mm and if as claimed the owner has the original 45mm end cans make sure you get both the 45-45 and 45-50 link pipes. 45-50 link pipes are getting like rocking horse poo. Price looks fair and certainly up to £1000 less than some chancers have tried. I wish your mate good luck, I love mine. Andy
Thanks mate, much appreciated. Would rather it had Termi's but think he will be okay with those, if there 50mm pipes I agree he would want the link pipe included so will ask all that.
Sorry my bad, was thinking of the 998 he looked at (but has discounted them because they are Japanese imported ones with high miles). Even the discs look correct to me, my 748 was a 2002 (built late 2001) and had the same ones.
Don't let the Trader do it and try and convince your mate to get a reputable main dealer or a good specialist to do it. I would suggest if your mate is local, not Blade Reading - it's a relatively new franchise and selling new bikes so the older ones just aren't going through the workshop that often. The 748R is just that bit different to require the experience. Andy
Yep we are, it would probably be Moto Rapido or Snells but I imagine we would strip it all down ready and just get them to change the belts and put it back together to test run. Save on the labour and all! Unless they still offer a fixed price like they used too (assuming no new rockers needed) I didn't think the 748r suffered from rocker issues come to think of it?
Yeah, see u have the 'newer' style heat shield on the exhaust which is what my 2002 had so I guess there was a crossover of some of the smaller details across the production. Lovely clean bike though!!! I have to say though I am steering him towards an 848 evo for around £7500, I know they aren't as special but I think it would suit his needs better. He wants to track day it and I think this would be too special to do it with
Okay, I've thrown a fair bit of cash at mine but it is my track bike and I love it. With a minimum of outlay 112 RWHP is easy and the torque delivery is so sweet. Brakes are awesome and it is a really compliant and comfortable ride. This comparison of bikes for the track often crops up and you have your advocates for every conceivable configuration going. I'm quick just not fast and I can live with that . Andy
