Plastic Repairs - 999 Mirrors

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Loz, May 25, 2012.

  1. much in the same way as superglue,,, tried that o_O

  2. Hmm, I didn't think Superglue worked that way. It just sat on the plastic edges without adhering in any meaningful way, when I tried it.

  3. It might work but not as well as on Styrene - your mirrors are a tri alloy of Acronitrile, Butadiene and Styrene and the glue melts the styrene element, don'tcha know nuffin :Wacky:

  5. ok mr brainiac,,, how do you suggest we repair the bloody stuff,,, is it even possible??

  6. We use araldite on prototype Jaguar and Range Rover exterior parts and never have an issue - also plastic welding but this requires compatible in-feed material and is far messier. Never had an issue, there are other stronger volatile glues we use to bond spoilers together like Sikoflex but really no necessary. The outer is ABS - there is a chance the inner is a PP but not seen one apart, if so it will need an adhesion promoter prior to bonding

  7. Like I said, we need some ExactFit jobby type bloke to make it work right. Before he gets replaced by a robot, hopefully.

  8. tried araldite,, no good,, used lots of sikoflex, mostly marine application, i know it is good, but that good,, ?????? never thot of it for the mirror,, at 20 qd a tube it is a pricey gamble..

  9. Be sure to let me know how you get on with that, Rod! :upyeah:

  12. I repaired snapped lugs on 999 fairing with milliput. 2 part setting modelling putty. If you can build it up on inside it should hold. One of them(the push in one for the front nose) came off after a few times but with a much larger suface area superglue has held it since then.

  13. I super glued mine let it set, then cut a cable tie into inch long bits then glued them across the break for added support ... It worked ...but ...... Couldn't live with the knowledge it was bodged and the small scratch was driving me nuts .... Is I've shelled 120 quid for a new one ...
