Non starting 848 Evo

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Matt DWrecker, Sep 22, 2012.

  1. Have a little issue with my Evo, as the title says it doesn't even try to start. Head light goes out when I hit the button to start but that's it. I got caught in a mother of all downpours yesterday after getting it serviced and it did cut out on me a few miles from home, but started fine straight after. Today I cleaned it, added new grips which were an absolute mare to get on but there now. Battery on the display is 12.1 and there are no warnings on the dash. Think that's everything relevant from the last few days.

Question is....is it water causing this? Or have I managed to stuff something up getting the grips on? Or could it be something else?

Thanks in advance for any help

  2. In gear? Kill switch not on?

  3. I've read things like this before and chuckled as they realised it was the kill switch....I must have flicked it when I was cleaning, didn't even cross my mind  Ugh!

Thank you so much! That has just saved me a whole lot of in person embarrassment!

  4. We'll keep it just between us, no one will ever know   :upyeah:

  5. Schoolboy error

  6. Personal experience in giving advice always the best

  7. I always cut my engine with the kill switch and leave it there until I want to start it again, same routine every time to start up again, ignition on kill switch on then fire her up.

  8. I was always told that stopping the bike via the kill switch is not good for the bike. If I remember correctly it puts the coils to earth or similar, not something you want happening routinely.

  9. If that's correct Ill change my routine, can anyone confirm.

  10. Thanks guys, I feel somewhat better now and yeah, schoolboy error was exactly the phrase that was bouncing round in my head all last night  Thank god I didn't call anyone out to it!

As for using the kill switch to stop the engine, not sure about how good that would be for the bike on a regular basis. I do know a few people who always leave it with the switch off when parked. Kinda like an extra bit of security, thinking being if a biker is daft enough to fall for it a random thief might not realise either

  11. Tbf if you look at the modern almost toggle flat kill switch, you cant really tell if on or off. The old days of on/off written in bold and the switch being flush only if on.

  12. Looking at the wiring diagram in the owners manual the switch appears to give an earth to a few components when on and vice versa. However, the manual also says;

    Warning
This switch is mainly intended for use in emergencies
when you need to stop the engine quickly. After stopping the
engine, return the switch to the position to enable
    starting.

I've found arguments on the 'Net that say unless you're in the habit of using it you won't hit it in an emergency. Bearing in mind that MotoGP racers don't remember to do it while falling off I don't think there's much hope that I'll remember. I'll take the advice of the owners manual, they say the above for some reason.
