1200 Multistrada Gearbox Issues

  1. Hi all,

Just found this forum and lots of useful information, so will definitely be hanging around more! The reason I found the forum is I was looking for information about some gearbox issues I am having with my Multistrada (2012 1200 model), however most people seem to have problems with their bikes dropping out of 2nd gear, which is not my problem.

On my bike, the problem I have is changing up from 4th to 5th, particularly under load - the change is really abrupt, and often feels like it "crunches" into gear. Sometimes it gets false neutrals too, going both up and down the gearbox. I've spoken to the Ducati dealer I bought it from (used) last year, they said there's no known warranty issues on this model for that issue - is that correct?

Any help/advice before I take it to the dealer for (potentially expensive) investigative work would be appreciated! FYI, the bike has done 5,500 miles and has a full Ducati service history.

    Thanks,

    Mike

  2. False neutral especially 5th to 4th is common and a baulky change is often the sign of a poorly adjusted chain. Multistrada 1200s presents a unique problem with the change in ride height between modes so easy to get wrong. You should have a guage in the tool kit and it is simple to check. Andy

  3. Hi Andy, thanks for the reply. Mine is a standard 1200 model (passive Sachs suspension), but will check the chain adjustment is OK - but this very much feels like a gearbox problem, kind of like when the synchro-mesh on an old car starts to give up!

  4. Okay, good luck with it. Andy

  5. Shot in the dark but your chain isn't to tight is it? I had problems with gears after I'd adjusted my chain to much slacken it off and it was fine. Not sure why it messed the gear change up but I couldn't find neutral until the engine was stopped.

  6. Mike I've experienced the same on my base model (Non S) DVT MTS.
Put it down to my ham footed gear changing, feels like gear lever not connected to anything when it happens ?
