Anyone Got Solar Panels (pv)

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by 749er, Oct 8, 2015.

  1. Be interested to know if they perform as per predicted?

    Reliability?

    Brand?

    Inverter brand?

Any other words of wisdom gratefully received.

  2. Have you seen the price of them ?

    Feckin' daylight robbery

  3. I had someone knock on my door yesterday asking if I was interested in getting in quick before the government stop the current grants.

    I said "no".

  4. I had someone knock on my door in the summer, before I said hello he said 'don't worry, I'm not selling anything' to which I replied 'your selling shit to stick on my roof aren't you'. He looked a little sad and said yes, then went away  That's all I know about the subject :D

  6. I have 3.6 Kw on my roof, fitted 3 years ago. Cost was £7000 for Bosch panels and Sunny Boy inverter. Received £1100 back first year + the free power. Great investment earns more than money in the bank

  7. Despite the scathing comments on here i have heard good things. About them, so much so that i am looking into gtetting a few myself to keep the nip out of my shed for winter ,, lots of peeps in spain use them and the gov is planning to tax them !!!! Look forward to hopefully some better input to your op q

  8. I've seen pics of your (very level) shed, surely a candle burning in the corner would be sufficient, it's what we used in snow holes in Norway?

Joking aside I've got panels on my roof, free electric when the suns out and we get about £230 every three months. Nothing gets put back into the grid though as we have some sort of box that puts electric into the immersion heater so constantly hot water. Cost was about £7,000 installed by EDF.

  9. Im getting 3.99 KW system fitted at the start of November. 6 panels on the South facing garage and 8 on the West (rear) of the house. Solar Edge seem to be the best/most reliable inverters/systems and they are the most advanced in terms of battery technology for the future as they are made by Tesla. The immersun system will feed unused energy into the immersion heater and direct any more ,once the water tank is up to temperature, to a towel rail in the family bathroom

I have/had concerns over the aesthetics of the panels but actually the new black panels without the silver edges are very smart. The returns should be good from them and they will return the investment (£7000) over 7 to 8 years....after that is all money in the bank.

I'll get some pictures up when its done

  10. I'd be interested to hear how the solar panels perform when they are 7 or 8 years old, after they have been repeatedly exposed to blown leaves, winter snows, blizzards, dust, frosts, bird shit, hailstorms, moss growth, and all the other miscellaneous hazards of the British climate. Also, I can't help wondering if the chances of rainwater leaks through the roof are increased by having solar panel brackets bolted on top of them. Sellers of panels don't seem to go into this in any detail.

  11. All valid concerns and things I've considered and discussed too

The panels Im getting have a guaranteed return rate/efficiency. If they drop below 85% or their efficiency over a period of time (I think it's 10 years) they get replaced.

I dont have any concerns over leaks. They'll probably leave a better roof than before!

  12. ha ha,,, i know that i dont need much more than a few candles,,, but i am looking for about .5 / .75 k

  13. Solar panels produce electricity but they also harvest subsidies from other electricity users and make a profit for the installers.

I have no doubt that the sellers of solar panels exaggerate their benefits just like the sellers of any other commodity.

  14. I have a 4KW panasonic system with SunnBoy inverter. Have had it for nearly 4 years I think and made about £1500 a year plus free electric during the day.

    Im happy

  15. Good to hear that people's experience is positive. The SAP model all suppliers use is supposed to be a bit pessimistic (according to a few suppliers) and from some of the numbers quoted that seems to be the case.

I am very interested in the battery technology that's coming. It's the reason the government is a oncoming the FIT. With it people wouldn't need a power company, and that upsets George and David's friends in the City.

So I am looking at that and hot water heating as per MrAliT.

  16. Are you on the previous higher rate?

  17. Please, please, everyone get solar panels. They are expensive and you get free energy and you will get more return than banking and retire at 50.

Its free. Let me know when batteries arnt involved

  18. yup, on the higher rate

  19. Like nuclear then?

All MCS installers must use the get approved SAP modelling software to assess financial viability.

  20. Just watch your FIT, when it starts and may end. The gov are reducing these big time!
