Secure Doors ?

  1. So you have your pride and joy in a brick built garage, but is it secure ?
Are these electric roller type doors more secure than say an up and over ?
    I'm thinking of getting one.

  2. I have roller doors at either end of my garage and the answer is ...... nah. The side channels to guide the door as it rolls up and down would not retain the door if you gave it a good shove. At least the manual roller door has a (flimsey) cross bar. Andy

  3. I've got both an up & over and a roller shutter door on my garage (1 building 2 'bays') and the roller shutter is definitely more secure as there's no gap to get a lever into and no 'disengage' lever like on the up & over that means you can lift it manually - albeit you need to be inside to do it.

It also keeps the cold/draught/water out as there are no gaps, meaning that I can heat my bike garage but would be wasting time/money trying to do the same for the car garage.

Only downside is it opens/shuts much slower, so no sharp exits...

  4. I had a Hormann sectional door on my last garage. It was a very well made item. I'll eventually put them on my current garage.

  5. Sectional door with rollers in galvanised steel channel most secure, as above.

Up and over tracked or canopy type both rubbish. Can get in some with just a screwdriver to dis engage top lock.
Steel roller (industrial type) can be fairly robust.

  6. If you have an up & over door and a separate access door into the garage, the up & over is usually easily made secure from the inside by jamming the door gear either side...........Depends on the type of door.

Unfortunately I have experienced both roller shutter and up & over doors being forced from the bottom by them being bent upwards enough to allow gits inside, who then opened the door enough to remove tools and a Harley.

  7. just ordered a roller door finally finish the garage extension, company called rollerdor out norwich way, surprisingly cheap considering the £1000-£1200 quotes from local people, £490 delivered for me to install

  8. I don't think any big door is truly secure, unless it's real faff to open/shut although there are things you can do to improve any of them, and whatever door you have you can fit an alarm/alert system so that no-one can get in without you knowing so.

More convenience generally means less security.

  9. Buy cheap pay twice, it will last 12 months and you'll be spending again on repairs eithers straps - new motor - control panel, the workings are all Chinese and shite, I guarantee that [emoji6] the reputable names such as SWS for rollers doors and Hormann for sectional should be your preferred choice.

Unless you have a galvanised roller shutter (as used on shop fronts) then no roller door is secure, a sectional door is about as robust as you can get for security, but still can be opened.

  10. Good lighting, decent camera and a good alarm is probably the best deterrent.

Don't get a bloody great big ugly growling dog, the divorce is expensive.

  11. If it only last 12 months fine as its warranted for 2 years. If they install it's covered for 5 years.

Chinese shite is everywhere now whether your paying pounds or pence.
I was a bit spectacle myself on the price but after checking online reviews (4.9/5) and seeing that most of their business is supply to trade willing I'm to bet it will be a quality product.

Update in a couple of weeks when it turns up.

  12. We got a " Garador". Uk company. Its not motorised but has 4 locking points.

The garage is wired to house alarm & security lights.

You can also install a "Bike It" garage alarm... 17 quid. Not bad at all...

    Bike It InfraRed Garage Alarm

    Worth a look.

  13. I got a roller door from easyfitgaragedoors.co.uk. Superb service and a good product

  14. I buy hundreds of rollers doors and not one is fitted with Chinese sourced products and low pulling powered motors (ask the seller what the power of the motor is in NM) there all sourced from the UK, all components are manufactured here in the UK as well ... you get what you pay for, but I can also supply a £400 roller door but I don't because there quality is inferior therefor I will not put my name to them, I suggest you read the small print on any warranty given and what it covers and not just what the bod States, supplying to the trade ! Should be read with some caution, builders want cheap to maximise there profit, they move on from job to job so if it last 12 months that's good enough.

Regardless what you buy, ask yourself how secure do you want it to be (are your garaged items valuable) because a roller door may look smart and up to date but it is the most vulnerable .

  15. If you want any advice pm me the product name and I'll happily give you some feedback.

  16. Which are good options (makes) for a single garage or a bespoke size for my timber garage? I have a bit of clearance above the opening on the single and lots on the timber one.

  17. You can get any size door made so size should not be a problem, obviously special sizes come at special prices £££ .

If you wanted a roller door that's good quality and secure that will last 15-20 years before it needs a new motor then buy an SWS Door.

If you want either an up-n-over or sectional then Hormann is what you should be looking at buying, these are premium doors so quality is exceptional and the market leaders and also have a vast range of finishes metal/wood/colours/security add on options.

  18. I secured the end of a standard container with a steel roller shutter, electric motor actuated and two manual locks all for £1000 + vat. Very heavy duty, insurance approved and hard to defeat.
    Two down sides
    Noisy
    Unattractive

Do you want the front of your mock Tudor home looking like a you've bolted part of Luton high Street on the side of it?

  19. What's the scores......

  20. How do you know I'm in a mock Tudor home ?
