Had a small bleed through the dressing last night, so I had a careful peek under part of it......... ........it looks like Ed Gein has had a go at my arm........... ...........but at least I still have my nose.
What Al has failed to mention is that just prior to hurting himself, he had jumped out of an airplane without a parachute. This was a contributory factor.
Fag paper thin skin from a protracted high dose of steroids, followed by long term daily doses of a steroid inhaler which was being absorbed, but shouldn't have been. And that's why I'm so short..........I used to be 6'-6" before I started doing that......
I had a look at it tonight with most of the dressing off........Eugh! It's still bleeding in places.......
I took a tumble on a carpet tennis court a couple of years ago and could not believe how much damage I had done. It was as though someone had taken a disc sander to my knee, elbow and hand. The nurse in the local gp practice used medical grade manuka honey on the wounds. Still took ages to heal as the skin was just gone but you'd never know now.
What happens with my injury / ies, is that the skin tears and either lifts up or rolls up exposing large-ish areas of flesh............ abit like dropping a new potato in warm water then pushing the skin with your thumb........... Assuming it hasn't got torn right off in some places like it has in the photo, I can usually get hold of the torn edges and unroll the skin and pull it nearly back to where it was torn from. Wiping with a Dettol solution will sometimes help drag it into the right direction..........then with 1/2" wide Steri-Strips, I tape the skin back down so it is pulling towards the tear line. Trouble is, it is usually bleeding quite a bit. I think I might need a whole jar of honey on this one.
I saw one of the accident programmes and a little old lady had fallen in her 90's When the paramedic took the sleeve off her arm her paper thin skin had rolled up Save her going to hospital he got tweezer and rolled the skin back down then steri stripped it then she was allowed home Blooming amazing
Wow dude. It's easy to forget that the skin is considered our largest organ. It's only when it starts to go wrong or we make holes in it that we start to consider it. Is there an alternative treatment for your other medical conditions that would allow you to stop the steroids? May be to return to them later, once the skin has recovered? All the best for a fast recovery.
Nope....I have been off the steroids for well over a year now, but the skin damage is permanent........the steroids reduce the thickness of the skin and destroys the collagen under it.......It can't be replaced. Hope you are getting on alright Paul..... Thanks All for the good wishes.
