996 996s Value

  1. Hi all, looking at a 996s (2001 Y) as a possible purchase and wondered if you could give any guidance on what you'd expect to pay for one. It's in really good condition and low <5K mileage. It appears to have had a few decent services.

  2. What is the vendor asking ? Prices are all over the place at the moment mostly because of chancers and dreamers asking (and not getting) inflated prices. Andy

  3. They don't really know where to price it either and told me to do a bit of research... which led me here! :) I'll get it for a fair price but you're right there seems to be a lot of variation, hence hoping I might skip the chancers/dreamers and get a rough idea here.

  4. You want to pay in the 5k range but will probably end up havng to pay in the 6k range if it is a really good example. I wouldn't go above 6.5 unless you really want it and are not lookng at it as an investment. Andy

  5. Thanks very much - I had £6k in my head so that's good.

  6. Go in at 5.5k and haggle. Depending on when the last service was done, that is always a good reason for holding back about £600 to £759. Andy

  7. It has a fairly good service history - I may post a bit of detail later on what/when for any further guidance.

  8. As above, what people are asking and getting are very different things. Generally bike sales seem slow from what I have seen. Quite a few nice bikes on here have not gone as quickly as you would think. I'd say Andy has got it about right. It will need the big service at 6k mls, valves and rockers checked, i expect it has only had belts/fluids done up till now. Red ones are worth more. And race Termi's are £200+.

  9. Have to say right now you ought to be looking a lots less than £6k, Oct/Nov is the worst time of the year to sell a bike and I don't think any 996s is worth that much any way, give it a couple of years maybe. The silly money stuff on ebay at this time of year is not representative of the market and they are there to catch people with more money than sense. Invariably they are being sold by people who don't need them to move on (usually silly prices for bikes with no miles), the bikes tend to take months to go or reappear in 12 months. For what its worth I just bought a <7k mile 999 for 3,900, the prices for a grey swinging arm 999 on ebay start at 4.5 with reserves much higher and aspirational prices of 5.5-6k (not in a million years) and they sit there for months unsold.
Try to find out how long its been for sale, offer 4.5 and see what the reaction is. If you want one, a much cheaper one that is just as good will come along soon enough, just be patient.
BTW on a previous Ducati forum we polled the rocker flaking issues and found from an unrepresentative sample of around 180 bikes (916,748 and 996s but mostly 748s) the 996 had by some distance the highest incidence of rocker failure. This should not have been much of a surprise as the 996 production coincided with Ducati's acknowledged component supplier quality issues. Anything built in 99/00 were the ones worst affected (late MY99, MY00 and early MY01 stuff). Whatever you get check carefully about the service history and most importantly by whom

  10. Mine is an 01. mayor service tomorrow..........

  11. I bought a 996 mid summer this year 2000 W. Yellow biposta 12000 miles full service history old mots. Also came with carbon termi system. All old mots. I paid £3.800 thinking I could sell it on and make a few quid. The guy I bought it from had it 3 years and it came with full mot. I put it on eBay this summer at £4495. Not a sniff on it. I made a point of the new chain and sprockets gold did. It was on a classified add for 28 days on the very last day I dropped it to £3999 and managed to get that for it.the colour may have put people off but it did look good with white number boards. I've just bid and won a 998 with termi system 7800 miles in red with mono seat I pick it up tomorrow with Bettes. £5798 so I wouldn't pay that sort of money for a 996.

  12. ^ and simon's 996 was mint!

  13. All this 996 talk makes me want one. I could sell my 899 and have a 996 , and a 848 Evo.

  14. Get a 998 for that sort money , as long as your planning on keeping it long term , but if your buying to ride then get a 1098 best value Ducati imho

  15. Do it, Dom! :)

  16. My problem with having more than 2 bikes is that it starts to get expensive for servicing and tyres. 2 bikes is ok , but 3 or 4 and it's too much. Plus one day I'll buy a 1098R and keep it forever.
